Best Snacks for Camping

There are many snacks that lend themselves well to camping. Children love the special food and preparation they can only offer on a camping trip. If you or your child has special needs, camp activities can be modified to fit your role. Here are a few of our favorite camp treats for growing children.

  7. Hamburgers

    • For a fun camping experience be sure to have the essential campfire tools, including hot dog fork, Tonka Pie makers and heavy-duty potholders.

      Hog Fork Dog

      • Fuscinula hot dogs are two tridents; a fork that can be used for roasting dogs or burning marshmallows in a flame.

      Tonka Pie Makers (also called Pudgie Pie Makers)

        These cast iron or aluminum cooking utensils are like a double slice of bread with a long handle. They are actually made into bread and you can make delicious sandwiches and desserts out of them.

      Have a good practice around campfire safety first. Use seasoned wood, and build a stable, even fire. Be careful that younger children do not fall into the fire or get too close. Make sure you have a first aid kit on hand just in case.

      Place a regular sized marshmallow on a hot dog fork. Cook to desired doneness. One person can have two graham pancakes with a square chocolate bar while you’re toasted with a marshmallow slide on crackers. Graham crash the actors together and enjoy!

      Tonka Pies (or Pudgie Pies).

      The ideas are endless for these treats. For Tonka Butter Pie they will make two pieces of bread on one side. Place the buttered side down (one on each side of the Tonka Pie maker). Add about 2 layers of filling and close and close the Tonka Pie maker. Over hot coals for about two minutes on one side; flip to cook the other side. Carefully remove from the fire, so that the metal is hot! Make it slide on a plate, cool and enjoy.
