In a previous article I talked about some of the great surf spots available during the summer on Garden Island. I was surprised how many people are interested in visiting Kauai. That entry gave the beginning of the lovers and certain
With dark weather, an occasional ocean swell from the north produces large waves. To the west of the main Hanalei Bay is a surface spot that is often the site of surface length contests. It is called “Pinetrees”. Adjacent to the tents is a place to hunt down and fire up the grill while waiting for the right conditions.
Lumahai Beach– A short drive west of Hanalei Bay is a special popular surf spot called Lumahai. The place is a little wild and woolly because of the solitude and the formation of the waves. There is no concern for life, nor any land. From the road, you need to find a jeep-covered road that leads to a reed overlooking the beach. Bring food and charcoal as you want to stay all day and maybe overnight. These are not legal camps, but nothing is as beautiful as an early morning at Lumahai. When the big waves blow, you’ll want to enter through frequent rest stops between surf sessions.
Kalihiwai Point- This popular beach, outside the town of Kilauea, is often the site of many pranks due to body surfing and boogie boards. In calmer weather the river is a popular kayak adventure. And in winter, watch out for the cliffs at east bay. The mighty waves carved a formidable crack in the rock walls showing the power of the sea. Again, no life support and only bare toilet necessities.
This inlet which is a popular bikini beach has become a challenge for surfers who have good swimming skills. Don’t rely on a surf leash to save your neck. This place is good to have a buddy.
Well, this is probably enough on the north coast to train you on a winter surf safari. Make sure you take your time and have a good look at what the local regular surfers are doing. There are more surface treasures on this coast, but I don’t dare to mention them in print if I ever want to go back there. Stay safe and get “tubed”
