Upon entry to the Box Hill Pizzeria, you may think it is just a regular pizzeria but let me tell you, it is very different from most pizza places I’ve been to! The Box Hill Pizzeria is located at 2915 Emmorton Road in Abingdon, MD. They are a small family owned business that first opened their doors in 1984. The Box Hill Pizzeria is located very close to Bel Air, MD which is about a 30 minute drive from Baltimore and about a 45 minute drive from the Maryland/Delaware border where I live. It is well worth the drive. Let me tell you why!
Box Hill Pizzeria has THE BEST crab cakes I have ever eaten! I have had crab cakes at some expensive restaurants in downtown Baltimore and in Ocean City, MD but none are as good as the crab cakes at Box Hill Pizzeria. They use fresh lump crabmeat and just the right seasonings to make these crab cakes. They fry or broil them to perfection. I’ve only had the broiled ones because that’s my preference and I have to say that they were absolutely delectable! They are huge and moist! One was more than enough to really be filling. I have returned there time and again just to order these crab cakes.
And, even better is that the price is not outrageously expensive. If you go to one of the fancier restaurants that server crab cakes, perhaps in downtown Baltimore, you would probably pay almost double the amount that you will pay at Box Hill Pizzeria. They can keep costs down because they are not a fancy restaurant. They serve their meals on paper plates and use plastic silverware but this is no detraction at all! It works just wonderfully for this special place!
Additionally, I have to say that they are not some dingy fast food restaurant either. You walk into Box Hill Pizzeria and there is a counter area for take out orders. But, if you walk a bit further, there is an actual dining room where a waitress will take your order. There are cozy booths and tables available in the dining room. There is a “homey” feel to the dining room and the wait staff is wonderful. They are prompt and courteous. They are caring and helpful. The first time I went in, I was told all about the menu and given recommendations. It just felt nice!
When I have gone to Box Hill Pizzeria, it has never been crowded but there are always people in there. They are a small place but you do not have to make a reservation. I have never had to wait for a table.
Box Hill Pizzeria obviously serves foods other than the wonderful crab cakes. Personally, I have only ordered the crab cakes but the rest of my family does not eat these so they have ordered different dishes. My daughter and husband ordered the pizza and I took a small taste and have to say that it is really great pizza. It is made with lots of cheese and just about any topping you can imagine. It is even good re-heated the next day!
The Box Hill Pizzeria has incredible Italian Specialties such as Chicken Parmigiana over spaghetti and Homemade Lasagna. My husband had the Chicken Parmigiana and said it was made with real chicken and that it was very tasty. The portion was large enough that my husband was able to share some of it with our daughter and still be plenty full.
My husband also frequently gets subs for lunch from Box Hill Pizzeria. He tells me that they are always stuffed very full with meat and veggies and are always prepared just as he orders them. They have cold subs with cold cuts such as turkey, ham or roast beef or salads such as tuna, shrimp or chicken. They also have a long list of hot subs with anything from a cheese steak to chicken to fried shrimp!
In addition to the Italian specialties, the Box Hill Pizzeria has a few Greek specialties as well. I have heard people rave over their Greek Salads and though I have never tasted one, based on the other foods I have had, I am sure that they are superb! They also serve Gyros.
And, to finish off your meal, the Box Hill Pizzeria has excellent desserts. I have had the éclairs and the cheesecake and I can honestly say that both were “out of this world” delicious! They have other desserts as well but these two are my favorites!
For a small, family owned restaurant, this place is tops in my book! They are very family friendly with high chairs available as well as a kids menu. The servers are always excited to see my two kids when we dine in at the Box Hill Pizzeria and they treat them well. Everyone is courteous and helpful and you will never be disappointed by the food.
