Buying Beaded Jewelry

Loving jewelry doesn’t mean you want to spend your time or money doing it yourself. But buying handmade jewelry can be a little tricky if you are not informed. Just as buying any jewelry from a store requires some looking and asking the right questions, buying handmade jewelry requires a close look.

The most common ways to buy handmade bead jewelry are craft fairs, online and gift shops. I personally like craft fairs because they allow you to ask questions, examine pieces personally, many species side by side. Whatever method of acquisition you prefer, there are some general tips to follow.

Ask about the type of button used. Obviously plastic beads are very cheap. while some are very beautiful, they sometimes fit, scratch or break. Glass beads are a little more expensive, but have the same problem unless handled with great care. Pearls, whether cultured or genuine pearls shine more than plastic pearls, cultured pearls are slightly cheaper. They are usually crystal beads, which add a beautiful color, sparkle and glam to the jewelry. They are a bit more expensive, but the quality is worth the price over other types of heads. Stone and semi-precious stone balls are obviously the strongest heads of the breed, but the price can sometimes be a bit steep.
