Camden, New Jersey: Poverty and Paradise

I recently moved to Camden NJ, Now if your from Jersey or Philly, why do you say your definitely? If you are not familiar with Camden, I will share the news with you. Camden seems to be among the highest murder and crime communities ever. Even in my ex. Not only in the state, but in the country. Now you might be saying, ok why move to that place. Surely no one would want to live there. I did it, and I did it for love. My fiancé is currently a law student at Rutgers Camden. When she first told me she was accepted, I never thought much of it. Would she want to go anywhere else that goes to Camden? Little did I know what a good school was. As it became more and more likely that this school was at the county we looked further. That commute was going to be ninety minutes anyway, meaning he would spend three hours in the car while studying. We drove to look at the campus and check out our housing options. Surprisingly, the area around the school was very pleasant.

Historic buildings, beautiful grounds, feature not only an aquarium, but also a minor league baseball stadium and concert arena. We signed a lease in a building called Victor. The RCA factory was once converted into luxury lofts, high ceilings, full of porticoes, a beautiful marble lobby, gymnasium, decks, and more. The view can be viewed even more than the building. The Ben Franklin Bridge is beautifully illuminated every night. The baseball stadium provides us with fireworks because the weekend team is in town. There is also a view of the Delaware River, with the city of Philadelphia, all outside our windows. Wow, does that sound great? It is, but where is Camden, whom I have heard of in my life? We found it entirely by accident, in fact. We decided to try to find a Sonic restaurant.

Little do we know, we are ordering Mapquest, not the safest route. We went down Broadway, and the further we went the worse it got. Boarded and burned buildings, drug dealers, prostitutes, and homeless people. Thank goodness it was still light. Maybe I had some life but it was shocking and surreal. I had a hard time believing I was still in the US let alone in N.J. The town seemed to have been devastated by the war. Needless to say, they found another and safer route home. I’ve seen Camden talk about everyone once, and that’s enough. I am enjoying my time in New Camden. The college campus, the charm of the land, and the great view of Philiy. They say there is a good side and a bad side in everything. At Camden, the bad is worse than I even imagined, but the good is far better than I ever imagined. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Camden Waterfront, I really recommend it, just remember, whatever Mapquest says, go off Broadway.
