Do you use the Camino browser? If not, you will give it a look. Camino is a browser written in Cocoa for Mac OS X (so it can use all the services and options built into OS X), based on the Firefox web browser rendering engine – Gecko. In my mind this makes the best of all worlds.
But like some software, Camino could be better. Although it has access to all the features of Mac OS X, it lacks things from Firefox, such as interface options. Unlike Firefox, which has hundreds of extensions and themes that add features and the look and feel of Firefox, Camino – like most Mac applications, unfortunately – isn’t all that customizable.
Enter Caminicon. Caminicon is a utility that makes it simple to change the Camino theme, either to one of the ten that come with Caminicon, or one of dozens of other themes available. Reinhold Penner wrote, Caminicon can be downloaded and used completely free of charge at his home page.
How easy is Caminicon to use? Simply start it, make sure it knows exactly where Camino is on your hard drive (typically in the Applications folder) and then – out options tab – make sure your copy of Caminicon has the listed themes all complete and up-to-date. There are almost 50 different icon themes available, although some are simply variants of others. This pales in comparison to the number available in Firefox, but compared to the zero other available, it’s a huge improvement.
Once the themes have been updated, simply go to the Themes icon tab, and – from the drop-down menu – select the one you’d like. You will see the icons displayed in the Camminicon toolbar, just like those in the main window, change to reflect the new program you have chosen. When you find one you like, click the blue Install button and in seconds your copy of Camino will use the new icons.
One of the beautiful things about Caminicon is that if you find an almost icon theme, you can totally pick and choose which icons to use by creating a custom theme. In this way, you can customize the icons from all themes, or the icons you have on your . As I mentioned, you can select icons from other Caminicon themes by simply clicking on them, or by drag and drop from the desktop . Once you’ve created a custom theme, it can be installed exactly the same as a pre-existing theme. You can also save your content for later distribution.
I think Caminicon is great. Simple, easy to use, and most importantly, exactly problem solving. Don’t like the existing Camino theme? Then grab a copy of Caminicon and change it. This results in nothing easier.
