Choosing the right pair of waders is something that perhaps more important then most anglers understand. The ideal pair of waders varies according to each angler’s needs. Listed here are the different types of fishing waders and which ones are most suitable.
Thigh waders are thigh high boots that allow you to walk through water or stand knee deep in water without worrying about getting wet. Hip waders are usually the cheapest waders you can buy and usually come with attached shoes. They are more effective for fishing small rivers or moving through shallow areas, but will limit where larger streams and rivers can be fished. Most hip waders are also not well insulated to protect you from the cold.
Chest waders are much more varied then hip waders. They range from light to heavy neoprene and come in both foot and ankle boot styles. First, chest waders are waders that come around the chest of the fisherman. Chest foot pedal waders do not have the boot attached, while chest foot pedal waders are attached to the boot waders. Light chest waders are usually light or breathable material that are suitable for hiking or warm fishing they add Heavy waders, normally neoprene waders, help protect the angle from cold and are best suited for cold water or stormy fishing.
If you plan on hiking or walking a lot in your waders, recommend light weight pedal chest waders, or hip waders. I normally choose box waders if I’m going to try deeper water. When water gets inside the hip waders, it can make for some very uncomfortable walks. By choosing a foot pedal, it allows you to change the boot you wear to a comfortable hiking boot. Special boots are made of sheaths for pedal foot waders and are much more comfortable than boots with foot waders attached to the shoulders. Lightweight waders will keep you comfortable even on warmer days. Speaking from experience, light waders are the way to go in most areas especially if the air temperature exceeds 60 degrees.
Heavy waders or neoprene are the best choices for fishing during the winter or in particularly cold water. Neoprene is a great insulating material and helps keep the fisherman warm in cold. Heavy waders come in both foot and ankle boot styles, but if you’re looking to stay warm built in boots are a great option. Boots are generally thick and durable and help to prevent cold water from rushing down your feet. But foot boot waders are not suitable for heavy hiking. If you plan on hiking to a fishing area and you tend to use heavier foot waders, I would recommend taking your waders back to the stream.
Choosing the right style of waders will help you enjoy your fishing experience more. The right style for the right situation will help you feel more comfortable and allow you to concentrate more on your fishing.
