Cincinnati is Ready for the 2012 World Choir Games

The 2012 World Choir Games countdown clock is ticking minute by minute in Fountain Square. No time has come on July 4th, when 400 choirs from 70 countries and thousands of international visitors converge on Cincinnati, Ohio. The World Choir Games have previously been held in Korea and Germany, and twice in China and Austria. Cincinnati is ready to host the American debut of the event.

The 2012 World Chorus Games website calls it the “Olympics of Choral Music”. Choirs must meet during the seven days of the choral competition. Participants will dress in the traditional fashion of the countries they represent. They will be judged in 23 musical categories, including rock, jazz, pop, gospel and folk.

Ready to play

Cincinnati began preparing for this international event long before Drew Lachey hosted the 2012 World Choir Games Countdown Celebration last July. As the official clock ticked off the year, organizing plans, volunteers, music and art enthusiasts worked on the last minutes;

    Church of Christ Cathedral, Cincinnati Masonic Center, Music Hall, School for Creative and Performing Arts and other venues within a “walkable grid” accessible from the Downtown Cincinnati area.
  • Gospel artist and nine-time Grammy winner, Kirk Franklin, wrote “I Can”, in 2012 World Choir Song Official game. It will be in Cincinnati to perform the opening ceremony song.
  • “Pig Pig Gig 2012: Do-Re-Wee” pigs will welcome visitors to the 2012 World Choir Games. Public art project is Artworks’ smaller version of the “Big Pig Gig” 2000. Sponsors for the life of pigs are a wide range of artists and institutions they decorated The “Do-Re-Wee” pigs will be located in Downtown locations. More pigs are already at Fifth and Vine at the corner of Fountain Square.
  • “Art For All”: The Taft Museum of Art’s 80th anniversary coincides with the 2012 World Choir Games and is celebrated with public art. In the museum he had 80 paintings printed to withstand outdoor conditions. Paintings on location at Fountain Square, Music Hall, the Cincinnati Museum Center and 73 other locations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky until September The Taft Museum of Art has a map of all 80 artworks.

Friendship events

Tickets for the dance competition start at $15. Opening Celebration prices range from $25. to $150., but families on a tight budget will still have access to free shows:

  • Friendship Concerts – Choral groups will perform free public events in parks, streets, malls and other city venues. The World Sports Choir website will post the schedule in the coming weeks.
