The Cowboys Stadium is the largest domed stadium in the world. The stadium, which replaced world-renowned Texas Stadium which opened in 1971, seats 80,000, however, it’s maximum capacity which includes special standing room only areas and folds out seats, is 110,000. The Statue of Liberty can fit inside of the thing with its doors closed. At a cost of over $1.3 billion, it is also one of the most expensive sports venues ever built.
The Stadium is home to the world’s largest high definition video screen. The four-sided screens were developed by Mitsubishi’s Diamond Vision Systems and consist of 10,584,064 LEDs, consuming some 635,000 watts. Weighing 600 tons, the screens are suspended 90 feet directly over the center of the playing surface and stretch from nearly one 20-yard line to the other. In other words, one of these video screens equals 3,268 52-inch televisions. The cable that holds the screen in place can support a Boeing 757 at maximum passenger capacity including luggage. This supersized jumbotron is recorded in the Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest High-Definition Video Display.
The Cowboys’ average ticket price is among the highest in football. Hey…Jerry had to pay for the thing somehow, right? The good news is that season tickets and standing only tickets are cheaper.
The stadium has a secret underground tunnel. Well… not really, the tunnel is 208 feet long and serves as the primary entrance point into the stadium for TV trucks, team buses, and deliveries of food, beverages and equipment.
You can get arrested and serve jail time without ever leaving the comfort of the stadium.The stadium is staffed with city police to run two large holding cells and three small isolation cells in the stadium. The cells, which were created by a firm specializing in jail construction, are actually quite common in large stadiums and arenas.
One final fact, the stadium will host Superbowl XLV in 2011, which is the first ever Super Bowl to be held in Dallas. The Cowboys Stadium will be the largest venue that has hosted this event since the game was last played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., in 1993. The game will be played Feb. 6, 2011.
