Cream Versus Lotion: What’s the Difference?

Cream and lotion, are they virtually the same or does the difference matter? While most people use these two words interchangeably, within the cosmetic industry the difference between cream and lotion is very important indeed. The two are not the same, and in some circumstances, one is more appropriate to use than the other.

The Similarities
Lotions and creams are the same in terms of their purpose. According to the site Difference Between, both emollient formulas are intended to bring moisture to the skin’s surface. Thus, both products can be used to moisturize. Creams and lotions are both comprised of similar ingredients as well. In general, they are a combination of oil and water, sometimes using specialty oils for additional benefits. Basically, creams are made of 50% oil and 50% water, while lotions are formulated with less (and sometimes no) oil for a lighter consistency.

The Differences
As mentioned before, the most basic difference between cream and oil is their composition. Creams are the thicker of the two types of emollient product, with a higher level of oil in their ingredients. Whether a cream or lotion is best for you depends on your skin type and/or special circumstances.

Lotions, according to Mama’s Health, are quickly and easily absorbed into the skin, sometimes even having a cooling effect. Use a body lotion if you have sensitive skin or a special condition like eczema. Body lotions are best for areas that have more hair, like a man’s chest or legs. Face lotions are the wiser choice for those with oily or combination skin. Some lotions are oil-free and specifically designed for oily skin.

Cream, on the other hand, are much thicker. Most aren’t greasy, but the higher the amount of oil, the more likely they are to feel oily. Creams are best suited to drier skin that needs both oil and water to balance its moisture levels. Some people switch to a cream during the colder, drier winter months.

Using Cream or Lotion
There are a few general scenarios when a cream or lotion is best. As mentioned before, oilier skin types should use lotion while those with drier skin are best served by a cream. Some people switch from a lotion in the summer to a cream in the winter. Some even use both in their daily routine: try a lotion for daytime use and a more emollient cream for nighttime moisture. Even further still, some may use a lotion for all-over moisture and a cream for specifically dry areas like the elbows or knees.

Finding the right skin care for yourself is a real trial-and-error process. Determine what type of skin and what special needs you have before you choose a lotion or cream to address your concerns.
