Culpeper should visit Virginia for those Civil War Buffs lucky enough to tour Virginia. 3 major battles took place in the region during the American Civil War. Battle of Brandy Station, Battle of Kelly’s Ford and Battle of Cedar Mountain.
Culpeper helps to offer these historic battles along with other great things. Civil War tourism is a major part of the economy in Virginia and Culpeper is high in my travel destinations.
In researching this article I spoke with Beth Bunch who is the Director of Tourism for Culpeper. I asked how many visitors are drawn to the historic sites of Culpeper each year, and he answered this. An average of 15 to 16 thousand visitors are counted in the Visitor Center each year plus a significant number that are not counted because they are repeat visitors / daytrip type visitors who do not stop at the Visitor Center. In historic sites, which have been numbered, the visit has arisen. At Graffiti House the number of visitors rose over 33% in 2006. The Cul-History Museum is also seeing a great increase in visits, especially with the opening last month of the new “Treasures of They present a snail.
Here are just a few things the Virginia Traveler has to offer.
Graffiti House
Located near Brandy Station Battlefield, and thought to have been built in 1858. The hospital was used by both Union and Confederate forces. The name Graffiti House comes from over 200 paintings and inscriptions on the walls, made by Civil War soldiers.
Sublimated Station
More than 20,000 troops engaged in this battle among 17,000 horsemen (horsemen) to engage in one of the greatest cavalry battles in history. Battles have tours every other Saturday from April to September, from 10am to noon. Tours begin at Graffiti Housing and costs $10 for adults, 12 and under are free. The money goes to the Foundation, which maintains the Battlefield Station and Sublimate in the house of Graffiti. They also offer a competition on certain days of the cavalry. They also offered lectures on the last Sunday of the month from April to November. See the site for more information. For further info on Brandy Station contact Gary Wilson at (540) 547-4106, or email him at [email protected]
Kelly Ford fought
See the link above for more details and points of interest. The Battle of Kelly’s Ford was a skirmish between 3,000 Northerners against 800 Southerners. According to the site, this was the first pure cavalry battle of any size, East of the Mississippi River.
Battle of Cedar Mountain
On August 9, 1862, a battle was fought 6 miles from Culpeper in the Cedar Mountain area. This battle was the only time on record that “Stonewall” Jackson had a close sword in battle. For more info and points of interest click the link above and also check here.
Museum of Culpeper History
In addition to a huge amount of Civil War history, the museum also has American Indians artifacts and dinosaur tracks! The office is a shop with supplies and education. It is located next to the Burgundy House (c.1750), which is the oldest Culpeper house and is open a> to visitors.
Culture has much more than the Civil War and other Latins.
There are several wineries and vineyards in the area. Old House Vineyards, Gray Spirit Vineyards, Prince Michel, and Unicorn Winery are also road signs that help you. finding them in your wine tour!
