How to build a step runner and beam in a carport
When building a carport, having a runner and a beam is the number one priority. Here are three ways runners can do this.
Three Post base Applications for Carport
1 : The log is placed in the hole and stabilized with concrete mix.
2: the post is placed on top of the existing concrete slab with a metal post base.
3: After the metal base is placed in the new hole mixed with concrete.
Whatever method is used, it is important that the base posts are lined up with all the other posts, and that the column height is the same. If the carport is attached to the house, start by determining how far from the house the runners should be needed. Measure and mark the location with two runners and square them.
The spacing between the posts will be determined by the size of the beams you use. The rule of thumb for sawing a beam is that every inch in height spans one foot. Therefore, a 4×8 inch beam spans 8 feet. This can vary greatly depending on the amount of weight the beam needs to carry. Check with your local building department. If you are using fiberglass or another lightweight roofing material, the system of thumb should do.
If you use method two, note where the center post will be placed on the concrete slab. You can use a broken line (a chalk string cover) or a flat string strictly between the first and last post-extended places. If there is nothing to tie the string, push out the concrete block from both sides to the straight bases. There should be another system, such as two long concrete nails and stuck on the outside where you want the bike to be. Make the string lines up either with the center or one edge of the base post.
With the locations now marked, use a drill hole for the right size of concrete to get the nail for the base. in place. Some bases have an adjustable bolt in case the hole ends up not exactly where you wanted. The bases will all be the same size, but make sure the strings are the same size. Proficiency is the key step, and it can’t be a concrete plan.
The method will require you to apply pressure to the treatment wood rot prevention. The hole will need to be two feet deep and eight to ten inches across. Extend the line to the lined holes. The center of the hole should match the space you’ve set, but you have a little leeway. With all the holes you’re digging, you’ll also want another line at the height of the runner. If there is nothing to tie a string line to, you can make a temporary tripod out of 2x4s with one leg towards the posts. This will tell you when you have the bottom of the bike at the correct height.
Add or subtract a bit of gravel to accommodate the bottom of the hole. There should be gravel at the bottom for a firm base for the runner anyway. Once the bike is ready to be erected, use two 2×4 or 1×4 boards and some stakes to secure it in a flat place. Concrete mix hole. Be sure to check that the posts are standing level in the correct position during the day and after you have added the concrete mix.
If you use the three method, dig the places and pits as above in method 1. You add several types of metal behind the wet concrete bases. Use a string line to connect the items, making sure you use the same spot for each base. Depending on the base, some will need help to keep them where you want them until the concrete sets up a bit. Scrapwood long enough to reach through the concrete usually works well. Sometimes a slight stimulus would come in handy for this charm. Be sure to keep the bases straight in this space, as there is no adjustment for these.
This type of base will keep your back surface so you won’t have to use treated wood. You’ll also want to check the inside corners of the post bases. There are some details and the corners are not always square. If so, you’ll want to shave off a bit of the edges of the bones that will be against the corners so that the filter sits on the bottom base. Again set up a string line so that the top of all the posts is received in the same plane. Use wood and stakes for vertical columns and bases as per the type of construction (nails or brackets).
You are now ready to place your rays. There are several manufacturers of log to beam boxes, let’s get some pairs. These are especially good if you work by yourself. You can set the half and attach it to the post, set the beam to release half already set the stop beam. This is a good time to check the double beam for the plane. If it isn’t, add some shims to make the labels, not a lot if you were careful with this part. Add the other half to secure the beam in place. Leave the support holding the bike vertical up to the floor.
