Hamsters are clean animals and clean themselves regularly. You should never wash your hamster, but if you do, there are some basic things you should know before you try.
Do hamsters need a bath?
Most hamsters do not need to be given baths. Hamsters clean themselves on a continuous basis. You can see them as soon as they woke up in the night. Most hamsters have a watch routine.
Most of their routines will eat a little bit from the stash near their bed, make a trip to the corner potty and then sit and groom themselves until an hour before they are ready to go out and play.
Hamsters have never liked being in water, but if you find a tick and don’t just cut off the fur, you should try and give it a bath.
The only bath time I ever had was when one of my hamsters got old and stopped cleaning itself as well. In this case I just used a damp cloth and wiped it off.
How do you wash your hamster?
The very first thing you need to know is that your hamster does not like water and that it bites. If you have a hamster that is already prone to biting, you may want to use a pair of thick gloves to try and soak your hamster.
Washing a hamster is not easy, and you need to have a lot of patience. First you will need a small plastic bowl with warm water about 2 inches in it for Teddy Bear Hamsters and 1 inch. and in it for Dwarf Hamsters.
hold the hamster in your hand and wash the dirty or smelly area. Do not get water around the hamsters face or ears. baby shampoo or pet shampoo especially made for small animals like hamsters.
Make sure to hold the hamster in one hand and gently move the cup of water in the other hand to wash the shampoo off the hamster.
When you’re done, place your hamster on a towel and let it dry gently on a damp surface. You can leave your hamster on your floor until you are satisfied or you can use a blow dryer on the lowest setting and let your fur dry.
A blow dryer is nice to use because they just have hot air over them, but make sure you have it on the lowest setting, and keep the blow dryer at least 5 feet away from the hamster so their skin doesn’t burn.
Only give your bath as a last resort, because it can remove perfumes from the hair and dry out the skin /a>.
