The Brees thing
In a season that most fans remember only because of an unbeaten playoff loss, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees set the NFL record for passing yards in a season. A year later, Brees set the NFL record for consecutive games with a TD pass. It would really be a daunting task to write an article listing all of Drew Brees’ NFL records.
However, the NFL is a dedicated record that Drew Brees has not yet reached. Although they don’t hold records in the NFL like they do in baseball, there is one trait that stands out among other quarterbacks. That’s the record for NFL career passing yards, currently held by Brett Favre.
When I researched this NFL record, I was amazed at how close it was to Drew Brees. The reason for the surprise was that Brees had a difficult time on the field early in his career with the San Diego Rockets. It’s a testament to the production in New Orleans that Brees now ranks eighth with 45,523 NFL career passing yards.
Barring injury, Brees will climb several rungs on this ladder in 2013. If Drew Brees even averages 4,000 yards for the Saints next year, he will pass Vinny Testaverde, Fran Tarkenton, and Warren Luna in five heads. Brees is fourth in passing for John Elway, with about 6,000 yards.
Brett Favre’s 71,838 NFL career passing yards seems like a daunting number. But Brees’ main challenge may come from being an active quarterback. Peyton Manning He has 59,138 career passing yards and shows no signs of slowing down. Maybe if Manning wins a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, before he breaks the record.
If Drew Brees retires at the end of his five-year contract, I don’t think he’ll break the record. He must keep playing at a high level and choose to continue his NFL career after his current contract expires. I can only hope that he doesn’t become a vagrant like Brett Favre did at the end of his NFL career.
QB Brees has already scored the biggest catch in New Orleans history. His current record as the leader in career passing yards cemented his claim to being the greatest QB in NFL history.
