As a mother of four, I’m always looking for ways to cut some corners. Except, the projects themselves are great unless they do it. Class-fit silent options that require large investments don’t save time – time is money. Here’s an easy, quick, DIY job that saved us at least $800 a year when the kids were young: home haircuts.
When our first child was born, he spent $20 on a Wahl hair clipper. It was done with an electric razor, several loose heads for cutting length, razor scissors, oil razors and a manual home shaver. The kit was more torn, but I got it sold. My husband and I have used the same set for 24 years to cut all four kids’ hair and sometimes cut each other’s hair.
You’re probably thinking, “I bet you’ve seen cute homemade haircuts for kids!” Let me convince you that the haircut kit is not only an easy job, but the haircuts look professional. Razor heads for the head are designed for different lengths: from shaved head to unc. On one head they are pointed, so that they cut cleanly through the ears. For two of our boys have done this very well.
But what about girls? I have one daughter with hair and one with straight. When my oldest daughter was a curly haired girl, I also saw my husband’s stylist cut his hair and cut my hair with scissors. I learned how to cut straight hair by watching my stylist cut it. It also helped that the leader was locked up.
When the hair is small, it is usually easier to cut. Cutting a straight line and a steady hand is all it takes. If you’re wrong, well, cain. To keep the razor working well, wipe it after use, and occasionally apply oil. Knives (with baggage) in a plastic container or reclosable bag.
Until the 12th century, children’s hair was cut in simple, popular styles. When they grew up, I kept them in regular hair styles so they wouldn’t feel (or look) awkward. I even did a decent Mohawk with that trend on! At the age of 12, the kids opt for a barbershop. That’s roughly the age when they begin to fail, the profession cuts. I was in favor of basic, cheap haircuts, but if the kids wanted a more expensive salon, they had to pay the difference. With jobs, they began to pay for their haircuts. One son cuts his hair using our razors.
Kids’ haircuts are cheaper than adults, but it still adds up – especially with four kids. Kids need about 8-10 haircuts annually. Charges vary by state and salon, but usually run at least $12 tip. If I were to pay for each child’s haircut it would cost more than $200 per year, factoring in growth and savings from coupons and discounts . Cutting hair at home, I save money at the salon. good time because I can cut my kids hair anytime I want without any pushing or waiting. I saved myself the stress of having to scold the other children while one child gets a haircut.
