Flashlight Review: Mini Maglite LED

Maglite is an American icon and an American-made product at its best. A professional standard such as a flashlight has long been used to identify consumers and police, security and other emergency personnel. However, for flashlight users who don’t need suspicious intruders to observe their authority, the full-size multiplex D-Cell Maglite could be a bit heavy. Enter the Mini Maglite LED.

The Mini Maglite LED delivers all the power of a full-size Maglite in a much smaller package. At 8 1/2 inches long, the Mini Maglite LED is 3 3/4 inches shorter than the traditional four D Cell Maglite. In circumference, the Mini Maglite LED tube measures 2 1/2 inches versus traditional Maglites 5 inches. While the Mini Maglite LED has the same rough machined aluminum body as the full size Maglite, it is much lighter. It feels solid, rugged, and precise with flashlight use.

The Mini Maglite also features what Mag Industries calls Intelligent Energy Source Management for extended battery life. Three AA batteries for four D cell batteries, Mini Maglite LED by 3 deliver false quantity by 3 Watt LED. Like the Maglite-sized flashlight, the Mini Maglite LED beam is focusable. While walking the dog at late night, I found a Mini Maglite LED projecting an intense white light high up in the woods and objects brightly illuminated which I would estimate to be over 50 feet away.

The Mini Maglite LED is activated and the beam is bright and turns the head of the lamp. I found this made difficult to turn the lamp with one hand. “Tactical” flashlight users will probably prefer the push-button operation of the traditional Maglite. The Mini Maglite LED comes with a black nylon holster that hangs from any belt and provides easy access to the flashlight.

The Mini Maglite LED can go many places where a traditional Maglite might look out of place. It fits easily in a briefcase, glove box, or seatback bag. So it can be available in case of emergency when it is really necessary. The Mag Industries Maglite website has many stories where Maglite has helped people survive a really bad situation. But not everyone can use the Maglite, Mini Maglite LED flashlight. In “Candle Mode”, just spray the head from the flashing body, the lamp comes on, and you put the bottom of the lamp on the head. As a lamp, the Mini Maglite LED casts a full 360-degree light, and can illuminate a dark room a little better than a traditional candle. I loved the versatility of this light. However, I found that the candle mode would be more intense for a romantic dinner. The 3-watt LED is very bright.

Mini Maglite LED also comes in a short 2 AA cell version and as full size 2, 3, and 4 D cell LED flashlights . Mag Industries also makes a traditional style Maglite called the Maglite Singular which uses a single AAA custom battery conventional bulb. Overall, I was impressed by the power, small size, and rugged construction of the Mini Maglite LED 3 AA cell. It really is a great American-made product.
