Goodbye Foley’s, hello Macy’s
You hear that hollow sounding voice that is likely the nation’s largest retailer, Federal Department Stores, devouring the No. 2 department store a> marketer, May Department Stores in an $11 billion acquisition.
It may also be from the legions of shocked shoppers who fondly remember shopping at the neighborhood Foley’s Department Store, who will turn to Macy’s in the fall of 2006 due to a merger.

What losing Foley’s Department Store means is something
Foley’s Department Store is an icon in places like Houston, Texas, where there are 16 out of a total of 69 stores. Most of Houston’s older residents nostalgically recall the weekend shopping sprees, where, with or without their parents, they would head to Foley’s Department Store downtown to pick up a special dress or party clothes. At Christmas time he always looked forward to a visit with Santa, and all the window films were a source of long-term business.
With the impending metamorphosis of Foley’s Department Stores into Macy’s, those memories may be all that remain of what is one of the most respected and beloved names in retail.
