If you are planning a trip to Georgia, there are any number of things that you can do and see. Cultural events are ongoing all throughout the year. Those of us who live in Georgia know this and do take advantage of it, however there are some really cool free things you can do during your trip to Georgia that might only take a day out of your visit. Everyone likes to have a good time especially when it isn’t going to cost them an arm and a leg to do it. Let’s start in Downtown Atlanta.
Downtown Atlanta offers up some great experiences from the High Museum of Art to the Georgia Aquarium, but if you are looking for an inexpensive day check out two of our best parks. Centennial Olympic Park is in the heart of Atlanta. Built before the 1996 Olympic games, it was the first park constructed in Downtown in more than 20 years. The fountains and lights are a spectacular sight at night. The other park is a little further out of downtown. Piedmont park is a great place for the family to relax. Bring your picnic basket and the frisbee and enjoy the bountiful green landscape. If you are looking for a museum to visit, check out the High to see which days they are offering free visitation or go to the Georgia Capital Museum for some local history and politics.
Moving a bit to the south of Atlanta you have several choices. In Macon, you can find the Ocmulgee National Monument. The Indian Mounds here are fascinating and for a small fee you can view their museum.
East of Macon, you can visit Eatonton, Georgia, and Rock Eagle. If you go a little farther East, Augusta offers up a beautiful Riverwalk as does Savannah. Savannah also has a great Historic Distric and not far away one of the most beautiful beaches on Tybee Island.
Coming back into the Atlanta area from Augusta, you might want to stop off at Stone Mountain. There is a great little town outside the park with gift and antique shops. Think about paying the admission to the park while in this area. For a small fee of ten dollars, you can climb the mountain, take in their laser light show, walk around the lake, visit the old time town, or let the kids play at one of the many play areas. It is a great way to spend a day.
Heading Northeast out of Atlanta for the day will land you in Helen, Georgia. This small town was build by German descendants and boast one of the largest Oktoberfest in the area. Here you can spend the day tubing down the river, taking a lazy carriage ride, or for the more adventurous a side trip to Unicoi State Park to climb Anna Ruby Falls.
Head West and your sure to run into Kennesaw. Kennesaw is the home of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
As you can see there are any number of things you can do in Georgia. Take the time to check out the travel guides and plan your day accordingly. Don’t forget to try and stop by The Varsity.
