This month, I’m getting paid close to $100 for carrying out personal inventories and wearing special plates that monitor light exposure and movement. A few months ago, I made a quick $10 by completing a 40-minute quiz about sexual behavior. Last year, I earned $25 for playing a game on a stranger’s computer in the window window for several hours and answering the survey.
What do these conditions have in common? There were all ways to pay for academic research studies run by professors and students at universities. While I can’t claim that it has made me rich, participating in academic studies has made it easy to research be socially useful, and even just a little fun. I have time to earn my money.
The payment of academic studies: Is it legitimate?
The Internet is littered with ads touting how to get paid for online surveys and other spam-successful “market research” run by greedy companies, but few of them are legitimate opportunities. And the academic research studies are designed to help the scholars with the vital information needed for the experimental work, when Bulletin boards. Look for flyers at coffeeshops, grocery stores, and other public spots – especially on university campuses.
– Public Transit. In urban centers, large and well-organized academic research studies can display their needs on trains and buses.
– Internet Searches. Although you can turn up a lot of fake results, it’s worth looking around on Google if you can find paid academic research in your area.
– Ads are indicated. Check out regular community newspapers, “alternative” newspapers, and specialty publications like college.
Payment for Academic Studies: Will they take me away?
Each study looks at different types of things. The specifications may be based on age, gender, physical/medical conditions, sexuality, geography, marital status, occupation, education, and other broadly structured criteria. Researchers may be discriminating in choosing subjects for their academic work, but if you look hard enough, at any point in time there is probably a study (or several) out there.
Typically, there is some pre-screening process to be done by phone or email so that you are compatible with the study and can participate. However, for the sake of the integrity of the academic project, researchers probably cannot share exactly what they are studying (besides the general subject), whether you are part of a control group or not, what they want, etc. Say what you will be asked to do, where you will be asked to do it, and roughly how long it will take.
Fees for academic studies: Are these studies online?
It is rare to find a University study that is completely online, although it is possible. I have completed one short and humble search through the web, but many of my personal experiences as academic research subjects involve in-person interactions with the university and sometimes bring some material back home and whole.
Payment of Academic Research Studies: How to pay? And how much?
Each study deals with different payouts, but it’s quite likely that you’ll be cashed in on the site or in cash. I have always been through a check, usually 2 – 6 weeks after the requirements have been completed. At some point during your signup or actual participation, the researchers will inform you how and when you will be satisfied. Otherwise ask!
Obviously, pay varies depending on the amount of time and what you are asked to do – anywhere from a low of $5 to highs of several hundred or more. The more complicated, time intensive, or personally invasive the study is, the higher wages are usually the boot.
Fees for academic studies: What about confidentiality?
A great deal of personal information is sometimes collected by researchers because so many studies are related to behavioral science or medicine. Be sure to read any relevant privacy notices to understand how your personal information may be used, and do not agree to participate unless you feel comfortable doing so.
