Golf Teaching Aid – Strengthening a Weak Grip

For many golfers, overlooking the importance of the proper golf grip is very common. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the biggest key elements in playing good golf.

A weak grip can create all sorts of problems out on the course. You’ll lose distance with your shots, and because a weak grip makes the clubface open, you’ll tend to slice or hook the ball.

So, what is a weak grip and how can I tell if that’s my problem?

Take the club in your hands and hold it like you would on the course. Are your thumbs lined up straight down the shaft? Is the “V” pointing directly up to your chin? If so, you have a weak grip.

When you have a weak grip the clubface is open, and you’ll tend to try and make up for this imbalance by changing your swing path more to the left of target in order to correct the problem. The results are predictable. You’ll see wild hooks, slices, and topped shots.

What can I do to solve this issue?
The good news is that with a little practice, you can make the necessary changes and correct the problem.

Here’s a tip you can try at home. Stand up and let your arms hang down. When you do this, you will notice that the palm of your hand will always face a little towards your back.

Now, take a golf club and grab it with your left hand. Once you’ve gripped the club, allow your hand to face the same way as it did when you just let it hand down, a little bit toward your right side.

Next, be sure your club is square with the ball. Now grip it with your right hand and you should feel a big difference.

Go ahead and address the ball and take note of where the “V” is pointing. You should only be seeing two knuckles when you look down. If you see three, your grip is too strong.

You may have to work with this for a while and practice gripping and re-gripping once you start hitting golf balls. It may even feel a bit uncomfortable for a little while, but you’re just overcoming an improper grip. With practice, you’ll notice a huge difference.
