California has a love affair with bamboo. From the south to the north of this long state, there are climate zones that are very amenable to this hardy plant. And the state’s population has the money and sophistication to make a market to support them. From running to clumping bamboo, the growers here have all sorts of varieties. Landscapers are using bamboo more and more for small area garden plantings, for windbreaks, for hedges and even groundcovers. Homeowners have become more educated about the many uses of this plant and are visiting and buying at nurseries that carry bamboo.

Rainforest Bamboos has an incredibly easy web site to navigate and though they have been in business for quite a while, they have just gotten online with the web site. They sell both running and clumping bamboo. There’s a very concise description of the two different varieties, their uses, the advantages and disadvantages of each type. Located in Chino Heights, this company has one of the country’s largest bamboo collections. They serve primarily the city of Los Angeles and the surrounding area but can occasionally ship an order if need be. Just make a call to them or contact by email. Another nursery in northern California, just north of Petaluma, carries quite an assortment of bamboo. They sell retail and wholesale and do quite a business with landscapers. They will sell to the public at wholesale prices, so it’s a great place to look around for bargains. Because off several factors, bamboo is not cheap. It pays to really shop around. And this nursery also does installation and bamboo removal if needed. Removal is far from an easy task, as anyone knows, so this is a web site that everyone should save if they will need removal at some time. This is not a mail order company, so there are no order links on the web site. It’s a good place to price shop, and for people near the area or in Sonoma County, a good place to visit to see mature varieties as they stand.

Located in the foothills northeast of San Diego, Fallen Oak grows bamboo on its 8 acres for sale to the public. The web site is not completed, but this nursery seems like it has a lot to offer people who want varieties that grow well in more arid climates. They have both running and clumping bamboos. They grow mostly the larger and faster growing varieties. Right now this nursery only sells locally and directly, with possible future plans to sell and ship countrywide. They ask that people contact them by email of phone to make an appointment to visit the nursery. No prices are listed on the site yet, but this nursery may have some arid-tolerant types that the other CA nurseries don’t have.
