Greek Mythology: A Study of the Greek Warrior, Hero & Hunter, Actaeon

Actaeon in Greek mythology was the most famous hunter of amazing talent and agility. Autonoe was the daughter of Cadmus. Autonoe was a minor Greek god, but no less of royal honor. He brought up his son with all the beliefs and opinions which the Greek gods had given to their children.

Like Achilles, Actaeon was trained by the centaur leader Chiron. Chiron’s ability to teach the art of fighting was legendary. Achilles and Actaeon were only a few, and many skilled fighters were made by his art. And this institution, according to what is told, led to the downfall of Actaeon.

According to one myth, Actaeon somehow created a conflict between himself and Diana, Greek goddess of the desert and sister of Apollo. According to the quarrel and serious reason, Diana was enraged. Finally Actaeon took the life of Artemis. But this is one example of Actaeon’s death.

Another possibility that also involves Diana deals with Actaeon’s cocky attitude. Actaeon was indeed a great warrior, perhaps overcoming his arrogance and angering Diana. In turn, Actaeon’s arrogant Artemis killed him, to prove Actaeon’s false skill.

Some sources say that his death was a way of transfiguration and then hunting into a new form. In this story Actaeon intruded upon Diana while she was washing. He looked at her trembling naked body. At this Diana turns Actaeon into a stag. Then, still using his new body, he ordered Actaeon’s own dogs to pursue Diana and kill him. The dogs, having killed Actaeon, ate his body. It is helpful to note that Tiresias is also said to have been transfigured because Athena saw him washing naked. Similarities such as this inspire throughout the mythologies, sometimes between the Greek-mythologies of different nations.

Actaeon’s death brought sorrow across the land. Animals of every kind cried out for their death. One day, in order to put an end to his sadness, the centaur Chiron returned in honor of Actaeon, his audience. He created a statue of Actaeon so artistically, it is said to have been so lifelike that anyone who looked at it would swear that it was a real man. This image pleased the beasts, and they cried no more.

It is helpful to note the parallels in the story of Actaeon in Greek mythology. In many ways very like Achilles. Fighting skills prove not so much throwing ability, but Chiron has always produced strong fighters. Therefore, as historians of Greek mythology, we can consequently assume that Actaeon was one of the major fighters in Greek mythological history [7] [1] The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology: Greek Mythology 15
