Everyone loves a good story. That’s what makes authors like Stephen King, Bentley Little and Robert R. McCammon so popular. New England’s strong superstition and history that goes back to the beginnings of this country and includes the Revolutionary War make Connecticut an excellent location for hides and havens.
Our “Haunted United States of America” tour in Connecticut. The “Nutmeg State” is home to 3,405,565 people, like the white lady, the specter of the black dog, a pair of star-crossed lovers and the shadow of Little Lottie of Saybrook Woods.
1. CORNWALL: Dudleyville
Dudleyville was first settled in 1738 by the family of William Dudley, but the area proved too harsh for farming, so he turned to charcoal production from the surrounding pines, and it proved to be profitable, although it lasted only a few decades. Strange accidents, death and madness beset the residents of Dudleyville and soon those in the surrounding communities viewed Dudleyville with great suspicion. The execrated area gained fame and soon no one wanted to live there. Today, modern Wiccans hold annual festivals and ceremonies in Dudleyville and it is said that “sensitive people” can still feel the dark forces after leaving Dudleyville. 2. Easton: Union Cemetery
Visitors to this cemetery for many years have reported speaking with “vital” apparitions who walk among the graves and then disappear. These real ghosts appear like the person before disappearing. Often the apparitions that occur here are those who are buried here and those known to be alive say that these ghosts “talk and behave as they did when they were alive.” Union Cemetery is also home to the infamous “White Lady” who has been seen here many times over the last sixty years.
3. MERIDIAN: Western Pecco State Park
A large black dogs and ghosts has occupied the hanging mountains and has been greeting hikers since the 1800s. According to witnesses, the dog will follow people to the top of West Peak, but leaves no tracks. The legend states, “The first man sees a dog bringing joy. The second vision is a warning. The third time a dog is seen it means imminent death.”
4. MONROE: Blessed Virgin Mary in the Chapel of the Rosary Cemetery
The same Mrs. White ghost can be seen near this cemetery and near the Union Cemetery. At times, witnesses have seen “dark, shadowy figures” trying to grab Mrs. White, and some believe she is actually Mrs. Knot, whose husband was killed near Easton in the 1940s.
5. NEW PORT: New Port port
In June 1648, a phantom tall ship disappeared in front of hundreds of witnesses who had gathered at Newport. After the most violent storm of the summer, the ship expired, slipping quietly into the harbor, and then “into a smoky cloud, which for some time dissipated, leaving, as everywhere, pure air.” It was supposed to be the ghost of a ship that had sailed from Newport a year earlier and was believed to have been lost at sea.
6. NEW LONDON: Saybrook Woods
During the winter, the shadow of a girl is sometimes seen in Saybrook Woods. She is believed to be “Lottie” who was Elihu Enken’s daughter. In the early 1700s he lived at the Wild Goose, his father’s tavern, which was once a stop on the Williamantic-Saybrook stagecoach. According to the story, a friend of her father’s, whom the locals called Old Dreary, took Lottie’s “friend” and “bewitched her.” Later that winter, residents began seeing the spirit of a young girl wearing a blue Lottie cape wandering the Saybrook Woods, leaving blood-soaked trails behind her. At length the two hunters perished, the girl dead, and the body disintegrated in the cave; and arms broken. She was still clothed in a distinctive blue cloak. Signs that he lived in the cave were found: pieces of food and a torn shawl in one corner. To this day, Lottie continues to haunt Saybrook Woods throughout the winter leaving tiny red footprints on snow white< /a> wherever it was seen.
7. NORTHERN FORESTS: Lyons Tavern
This sixteen-room farmhouse and shop dates back to before the Revolutionary War, although when the Viner family acquired it in 1951, it was in poor condition. The family, however, unknown to them, the spirits who were in the house began the process, the Lyons began to restore the tavern to its former glory. Viners and guests soon began to run upstairs upon hearing the footsteps, which were always “followed by a couple of beats on the floor.” The disturbances quickly grew in intensity and were accompanied by extreme cold in the upper room. No explanations have ever been found. Then in 1959, Mrs. Viner was removing wallpaper in one of the floors, and found the walls covered with old dirt. . The family researched the history of the Lyon Tavern and soon discovered that the Tavern was the site of a lovers’ argument in which two men involved killed each other. Soon the family screams were heard in the night, followed by the continuation of the bloody shadow. Eventually, the breakdowns grew to the point that Viners could no longer stand living in the house and moved out in 1961. No one could live long in Lyons Tavern today and the house was left deserted.
8. SOUTHTON: Snedecker House
When the Snedeckers moved into their new home in 1986, they had no idea until their 14-year-old son began seeing “nun apparitions” in the house. Soon, the whole family started hearing scratching sounds and bloody whispering coming from the walls. The family soon began to encounter ghosts around the house, among which “an old man in a blue suit with eyes rolled back in his head, a young man with longreal hair and a boy wearing Superman pajamas.” Then Snedecker’s eighteen-year-old daughter began to be troubled by an “evil presence.” For several nights he would wake up screaming and something was attacking him. The Snedeckers had enough and for hours long exorcisms were performed and the house was declared a “world of spirits”. “A Vatican expert-demonologist. Later it was discovered that the house, which was almost a century old, was once a funeral home and founders had placed it in the room, and it was suspected that necrophilia had occurred at the time of the funeral home.
9. STRATFORD: Phelps Mansion
Dr. Eliakim Phelps was a Presbyterian minister who was a spiritual entertainer. He had several séances and liked the experiment with methods of contacting the dead. However, his “love” eventually led to nearly six months of terror for his family. On March 10, 1850, the family returned from the services to find the front open and wrapped in a black cloth. In the upper room lay a veiled corpse on a table, which disappeared after a few minutes. Phelps soon discovered a vision of one Goody Bassett, who had been hanged as a witch in 1661. A week later, they were found “animalistic, life-like portraits carefully stuffed out of clothing.” Nineteen more were discovered over the next few weeks. Strange voices and moving objects haunted the Phelps house, and Dr. Phelps invited a colleague to his home who was witnessing the news. The clergy stayed with Phelps for three weeks and saw, among other things, chairs and light tables and materials from mid-air. An event appeared between the two Phelps children: twelve-year-old Harry and four-year-old Anna.
As the news spread, reporters, scientists, and psychics from all over countries came to witness paranormal events at Phelps’ home . dozens of witnesses “heard odd knocking sounds and heavy floats through the air. Some ‘danced’ across the floor and ‘danced’ through the windows.” Unusually, when Harry and Anna were sent to boarding schools, the paranormal activity in the house stopped. More recently, in 1971 the police in Stratford were investigating reports of vandalism in the old Phelps mansion and chased a little upstairs bedroom< /a> where. .. disappeared.
10. TOLLAND: Grandsons of Daniel Benton
Daniel Benton began his own brick and wood home in 1720. When he died in 1776; His family lived in stables for many years. Today, the site of two Revolutionary War soldiers is said to be haunted by ghosts. The first is a Hessian soldier, who is one of the twenty-four Hessian mercenaries locked up in a cell. The second is believed to be Elisha Barton who found his beloved Jemin Barrows. Two of them died of smallpox and were buried in the family plot. Unfortunately, their graves were separated by a vehicle guarding the road, permanently separating them. Today, guests report hearing disembodied voices and unknown screaming and rapping at the Bertone Homestead.
