The film begins shortly after the bloody victory of the Sioux over the Guardian General at Little Big Horn. The perspectives of the three characters are intertwined, due to their unique perspectives on historical events. Three characters who share their views are Charles Eastman. Sitting Buss and Senator Henry Dawes.
Characters in the film include:
Charles Eastman played by Adam Beach is a young, Dartmouth-educated doctor of the Santee Sioux, who was raised a Christian and became a doctor on the reservation as a living proof. the victory of assimilation.
Sitting Bull played by August Schellenberg is a proud Lakota chief refuses to submit to U. S. government policies that rob the Dakota people of their identity, dignity, and sacred land, which they are. filled with gold
Senator Henry Dawes played Aidan Quinn who was one of political architects in managing Indian affairs.
Elaine Goodale played by Anna Paquin, who works to improve the life of a patrician teacher on the reservation.
General William Tecumseh Shermanplayed by Feore
Wovoka played Studi An Indian prophet who inspires hope in the Indians in the end of suffering.
The hope of the Indians was destroyed after the assassination of the sitting Bull and the massacre of hundreds of Indians by the 7 Calvaria in Genoa on December 19, 1890.
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown, was published in 1971. The book is considered to be one of the greatest works about the subjugation of the American Indian. The book has sold nearly four million copies and has been translated into 17 languages, according to HBO (hbo.com).
Dee Brown’s book covers the history of thirty years from 1860 to 1890. The book uses several eyewitness accounts and official records to History of the American West Colony. Two historical figures that are not in the book, but in the movie, are Charles Eastman and Elaine Goodale. The HBO movie is based on the last chapter of the book.
