Highlander 5: The Source is the last movie installment in the Highlander series. Adrian Paul returns as Immortal Highlander Duncan MacLeod. Duncan and his immortal allies are searching for the immortal Holy Grail: The Source. Peter Wingfield and Jim Brynes return as their characters from the TV series Highlander. Thekla Reuten plays Anna Teshemka, Duncan’s current mortal wife. Warning: my review of the movie contains plot spoilers.
It’s not my favorite Highlander movie but it’s not bad for entertaining mindlessly. It really seemed more like an extension of the Highlander TV series with a sad whiney Duncan. The film is set in the not-so-distant future where chaos reigns supreme. So now Ythim will meet us Mad Max. And of course the villain Mad Max will reject the villain. The main plot is Anna leading the immortals around the dark world following some starry night. They arrive at the final battle between Duncan and the Nebula, the guardian of the fountain. Of course Duncan the villain wins, gets the girl, and actually finds the source of life. Yup, now the wife is pregnant. Seriously? What a lame outcome! There can be only one” in fact he meant that there was only one worthy enough to merit his desire life with a woman. loves and life creating
One of the problems with the movie was that it was too direct like a TV show and not a movie. I really felt like it was three Highlander episodes rolled into one. And maybe this was the producer’s original intention, because my Blockbuster DVD sleeve says “the legend is reborn in a new trilogy that follows Duncan MacLeod’s Immortal Highlander.” As far as I know, there aren’t two other movies planned so I assume that it was originally planned as a TV movie. Maybe it was a TV movie because my mom swears she saw it on TV. Oh and the director decided to film some of the rock formations, which seemed so out of place and ruined the flow of the film.
I’m trying to think about what I loved about the movie. They liked Peter Wingfield’s methods. He was always my favorite character from the series so it was nice to see him back in this movie. And maybe he survived the cannibals so if another stupid producer made a sequel in ten years, at least Methos could come back. Actually I think I just came up with a great idea for a spin-off. Now that McLeod is making babies, let’s follow Methos around as he wants his turn to come with him killing off lots of immortals for no apparent reason.
movie 2 out of 5 stars. It wasn’t a complete waste of time on the plane but I’m not sure what I’ll see anymore
