Hinterland Brewery: Green Bay, Wisconsin

Hinterland Brewery is located at 313 Dousman Street in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are located in a large historic brick building that was previous used as a meat packing warehouse.

Hours

The bar/lounge is open from 4pm-close Monday-Saturday

Dinner is served from 5pm-10pm

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of Hinterland is very cozy and open. The walls are made of light colored bricks to give it that historic vibe. In the corner of the room is a huge moose head that is hanging on the wall over a large fireplace; spot lights illuminate the moose head at night.

Long, tall windows brighten up the entire dining room. The tables and chairs are spaced out nicely on the wood floor; so you don’t feel like you are being crowded by the table next to you as you do in other breweries.

The high ceilings make the place look open and spacious, but do not offer the best sound absorption, so it does get a little loud in here when it is busy.

Upstairs there is another seating area that has a balcony that overlooks the downstairs dining room. The lounge area and bar is super nice. They have a few large comfortable leather chairs located around small tables where you can relax and have a conversation with friends. It was a great area to kick back and drink beer. With the large brick columns and old wooden ceiling, it looked very old and historic up here.

There is also a small eating area outside on the patio, but the only view out here was the large brick building, so we decided to eat inside.

Menu

The menu at the brewery really impressed me and was not your average brewery choices. There were some really great combinations of uncommon pairings that made your mouth water reading the descriptions.

Some examples of appetizers…

  • Ginger dusted calamari
  • Halibut cheeks with a miso emulsion
  • Creole BBQ Gulf shrimp
  • Hinterland carbonara with guanciale, sweet pea, egg and manchego

Examples of Entrees…

  • Wood-fire grilled Meyer natural ribeye with a veal reduction.
  • Cornnut encrusted pork loins
  • Duck and quail duo
  • Smoked mustard dusted walleye

For our appetizer I ordered the sweet grass farms beef potstickers with a sweet chili dipping sauce. They were definitely in the top 10 for potstickers that I have tried at different restaurants. For my meal I ordered the Andouille encrusted halibut with a red hot butter sauce. Wow, another perfect choice for me. The entr©e was served with sweet peppers, zucchini and spinach.

If you are looking for a more “bar friendly” menu… The Lounge area offers that.

Examples on the Lounge Menu…

  • Kobe beef sliders
  • Baja fish tacos
  • Fish and chips
  • Wood fire Soppresatta pizza with capers, mushrooms and tomato sauce

Brewed Beer

The beer that Hinterland creates is carefully crafted for quality and consistency to provide an exceptional craft beer experience. Currently the brewery creates 10 different styles of beer with different aromas, colors and flavors.

Cool fact that the bartender told us is that President Obama ordered a few cases of their brewed beer to be sent to the White House for his 2011 Superbowl Party, which Green Bay in the Superbowl he wanted a great tasting brew from their home town.

Beer’s they brew…

  • Pale Ale- Dark, golden hue with floral hop accents
  • White Out- dark chestnut brown Bourbon Barrel Strong Ale with a buttery caramel malt and bourbon aroma (Good luck trying this one, the bartender let us know that every time they have it, it sells out FAST)
  • Luna Stout- Bold, rich and creamy with coffee like character and a hint of chocolate
  • Pub Draught- Thick and creamy Hybrid Pale Ale with a smooth aroma of light English hops
  • Amber Ale- A deep amber color with a taste of caramel
  • Oktoberfest- a malty deep golden lager with rich caramel flavor
  • Cherry Wheat- (My favorite) light bodied brew with a tart cherry finish
  • Winterland- Dark colored with a rich roasted malt flavor. Very bitter and full of great aroma
  • Maple Bock- Dark Brown bock with a sweet, rich chocolate flavor with a touch of caramel.

Prices

I thought the prices were a little on the high end even for a big city like Green Bay, but you are paying for quality here not the quantity and in the end you do get what you pay for. You will be able to share an appetizer here and still be able to finish your meal.

Appetizers ranged from $10-$14

Entrees ranged from $28-$42

Service

The service was just okay. Yes they were busy when we went, but there was enough staff that should have been able to handle the rush. Our waitress seemed slow, and enjoy talking with tables more than serving them. So a few times we walked up to the bar to get our own drinks. I let the bartender know on the way out that the meal was awesome, but the service needed a little work. He told me he would pass on the information to the owner.

Overall

Even with the not so great waitress we had, our experience was great and I would come back here again, hopefully we will get a different server. A little pricey, but worth it, a little loud but brew pubs are like that, a great historic atmosphere, and excellent brewed beer that will make you make you crave more.
