Homemade Mother’s Day Planter

A homemade Mother’s Day planter is the perfect gift for mother’s who enjoy flower gardening. Scrap lumber, a few nails and acrylic spray paint assembles into this easy to make gift. Set aside two hours to complete this project.

Things You’ll Need:

4, 5-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
4, 6-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
4, 7-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
4, 8-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
1, 13 1/2-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
2, 15-inch long pieces of 1-by-4’s
1, 13 1/3-by-13 1/2-inch piece of 3/4-inch plywood
Pencil
Ruler
Table saw
Wood glue
Hammer
Nails
Acrylic spray paint

Instructions:

Step 1 – Place the 13 1/2-inch piece of plywood flat work surface to use as the inside supports, also known as the base, for the planter. Squeeze a line of wood glue along the 3/4-inch height of each side of the plywood.

Step 2 – Stand two 13 1/2-inch boards on edge so they are 13 1/3-inches. Slide the boards to the 13 1/2-inch edge of the planter base so the edges match. Press the wood into the glue and nail in place.

Step 3 – Squeeze a line of wood glue along the narrow edges of the two 13 1/2-inch pieces of 1-by-4’s.

Step 4 – Stand the two 15-inch pieces of 1-by-4’s on edge so they are 15-inches long. slide the boards to the 13 1/2-inch piece of plywood in the remaining two openings. Press the boards into the glue and nail in place.

Step 5 – Secure a 4-, 5-, 6- and 7-inch length of lumber on each side of the inside support starting with the two 15-inch sides. Stand each piece on end. Squeeze wood glue on the bottom 3-inches of the back of each piece. Turn the base so a 15-inch length of board is facing you. Place the 7-inch board on the left hand side of the 15-inch length of board. Position the left edge so it is even with the outside board. Secure the board to the inside support with four nails. Position the nails to form a 2 1/2-inch square on the bottom 3-inches of the board. The nails are positioned 1/4-inch in from the outside edges and will go through both the standing board and the support. Repeat the process with the 5-, 4- and 6-inch board. Turn the planter box and repeat the process on the opposite side.

Step 6 – Repeat Step 5 on the remaining two sides of the planter box.

Step 7 – Apply a coat of spray paint to the entire homemade Mother’s Day planter. Allow the spray paint to dry 15 minutes. Repeat the process for a total of three coats.

Tips: Add hand painted decorations to the outside of the Mother’s Day planter. Place potted garden plants or flowers inside the box for a added Mother’s Day gift.
