Homemade Treatments for Windburn

When you think of who is at risk for getting windburn, you may think only the Eskimos and the people who live in the colder regions are at risk. While a combination of the wind and frigid cold temperatures can dry and redden your skin, windburn can even happen in windy, extremely hot temperatures. There are several products on the market you can use to relieve the pain and redness, but, try these homemade treatments for Windburn instead!

Any part of your skin, which, by the way, is the body’s largest organ, can become damaged from Windburn. Typically, though, it’s the face and hands that are most often affected. You can protect these areas of your body by covering them up or applying moisturizer before you go outside in extremely hot or cold, windy weather.

To relieve the pain and redness of Windburn, the first step in any homemade treatment begins by using a warm or cold compress. A wash cloth that’s dipped in warm water, wrung out and held against the Windburned skin will help get rid of the coldness. Or, dip a wash cloth in cool water if your Windburn was caused by windy conditions in a sizzling hot region.

The next step is to gently wash the affected skin with a moisturizing soap and lukewarm water. Rinse well, then dab- don’t rub- your skin until it’s damp with a soft, clean towel.

Next, to help protect and moisturize your Windburned skin, you can apply a coating of petroleum jelly to it. Gently reapply the jelly to your face, hands or other area two to three times a day until the Windburn has healed.

You can then continue to use petroleum jelly to protect your skin everytime you go outside in the extreme temperatures.

Or, another homemade treatment for Windburn is Vitamin E oil. Vitamin E helps moisturize dry skin and repair damaged skin. This gem of nature is even useful for getting rid of wrinkles, acne and scars, so you can see how beneficial it is for your skin.

And it’s easy to use. Simply prick a few Vitamin E capsules with a needle and squeeze the oil out onto your skin. Gently spread the oil evenly across the affected area two or three times a day until the skin is healed.

If you have an Aloe Vera plant, you can break off one of the spiny leaves and rub the soothing juice directly on the Windburned skin. Aloe Vera also soothes and heals damaged skin.

Use it on cleansed skin two or three times a day and you’ll see results in a day or two, depending how severe the Windburn is.

And finally, Windburn can be effectively treated with another homemade remedy- German Chamomile Oil. German Chamomile contains Chamazulene. This compound helps soothe and calm red, inflamed skin naturally.

Petroleum jelly can be readily found at your local grocery or store. The remaining oils and Aloe Vera juice can be found at a healthfood store. Or explore the Internet using your favorite search engine.
