‘House’ Season 6 Episode 20 ‘Baggage’

In ‘House’ Season 6 Episode 20 ‘Baggage’ House is having another session with Dr. Nolan, his therapist, and has arrived late. This is something that Nolan finds almost as significant as House’s new interest in hitting the bottle.

Spoilers surely follow.

Since Sam is moving in with Wilson, Wilson would like House to move out. This, in and of itself, is producing stress that House is denying. But when he arrives back at his old apartment, where he used to do drugs and see people who are not there, House finds Juan Alvarez redecorating and with a color scheme he can’t stand. This too adds to House’s stress. Alvi, as he is called, has also sold some of House’s stuff, including some rare books, one of which was supposed to be a gift to Cuddy “at the appropriate time,” which may never come.

House has to buy most of the books back at inflated prices. One, though, Alvi has to steal back for him. House takes Alvi with him to keep him from doing more damage.

The patient this week is a young woman found jogging in a strange place with a heart monitor and no memory. A bit of detective work, aided by the street wise Alvi, locates the woman’s husband and a name, Sidney. Before leaving her to regain her memory in familiar surroundings, Sidney has the obligatory House seizure.

The upshot of the case is that at one point they want to cut her brain to stop what appears to be an infection, though it might make her permanently amnesic. While arguing with the husband about consent, House notices that the infection has spread to the brain stem. A bit of radiation and chemo will give her a few extra days to put her affairs in order and maybe allow her to discover who she is before she dies.

Or does it? House notices that Sidney has a tattoo imperfectly removed. It has caused an allergic reaction. Now she can be fixed and will be all better soon.

In the meantime it is learned that Alvi is reluctant to go to an immigration hearing for fear of being deported. He is actually Puerto Rican and thus a citizen, but cannot prove it. House turns him into ICE in which appears to be a House act of cruelty to get a man who obviously irritates him out of his hair. But then he turns around and tells the immigration court that DNA testing proves that Alvi is what he says he is.

Is that true? Asks Alvi.

Could be, replies House.

House has noticed something, which he relays to Dr. Nolan. Wilson and Sam are happy. Cuddy has a new love and she is happy. Even Alvi has gotten what he wants. So why is House not happy? And if House is not happy, what good is Nolan?

One could argue that by realizing that he wants to be happy, House has made a breakthrough. Not that he realizes that yet.
