Frosted eye shadow is like cake frosting: it should be enjoyed by the young and used in moderation, or the overall effect will be ruined. Frosted eye shadows brighten the eyes, provide contrast to dark lashes, and be blended with other colors.Frosted eye shadow can be worn year round, although it looks most at home in the opposing months of winter and summer. Anyone can learn to apply frosted eye shadow.
Frosted to Matte
Think of eye shadow types in a graph.
Matte – The least shimmery eye shadow is matte, or flat color.
Satin or Shimmer – Satin eye shadows have some shimmer, and are a happy medium between matte and frosted. They are shimmery, but in a softer and more subtle way than frosted eye shadow.
Frosted – Frosted eye shadows, often called “perle” are the most shimmery eye shadows you can wear.
Metallics – Metallic eye shadows shimmer and add glamour. Think of metallics as frosted eye shadows in neutral metal colors including gold, bronze, copper and silver.
Glitter Eye Shadow – The most shimmery eye shadow would be a glitter eye shadow, which unless you are in a music video, 12, or are taking a time machine back to 1976, should be avoided.
How to Apply Frosted Eye Shadow
1. Apply your favorite day moisturizer to your entire face before applying any make up.
2. Use a makeup primer or skip directly to your foundation. Dab foundation on your eyelids as well. Use your fingers or a cosmetic sponge, whichever works for you.
3. Sweep eye shadow over the eye lid and into the crease.
4. Blend a darker, matte color into the crease of the eye.
5. Add drama by adding matte color the outer corners of the eyes, sweeping up to meet the crease.
6. Finish with a matte, neutral color on the brow bone.
More Ways to Use Frosted Eye Shadow
Fun Summer look: For a clean summer look, apply the frosted eye shadow only to the eyelid and blend lightly into the crease. Leave the rest of the eye area natural.
Frosted Eye Shadow as a Highlight Only – Apply frosted eye shadow under the eyebrow and on the inner corners of the eye, to make eyes pop.
Mature Eyelids and Frosted Eye Shadow: Yes, you can!
When your eyelids mature and fine lines begin to appear, you do not have to abandon frosted eye shadow. You do, however need to take care in how you apply frosted eye shadow. If you apply frosted eye shadow with your fingers, the frosted shadow will settle into every fine line and tiny wrinkle.
Use a natural bristle eye shadow brush to apply the frosted eye shadow. With the brush you will have a smoother application of eye shadow, and the fine lines won’t be center stage.
You could also use matte shadow and save the frosted shadow to use as a highlight on the more taut skin of the brow bone.
