How to cancel your AOL account with minimal hassle and time.
Horror stories have been spread across the internet for years of apparently how hard it can be to cancel an AOL account once the account is no longer needed.
One gentleman even recorded his AOL call when trying to cancel his account and the AOL representative tried extremely hard to find out why he was canceling. Needless to say, the recorded conversation made it onto television, the account eventually got canceled, and the representative was fired.
But armed with the following information, canceling an AOL account can be done in just a few minutes.
Gather your information before attempting to cancel an AOL account.
This information will include your name, billing address, AOL user name, and the answer to your security question created when you opened the account.
Call to cancel an AOL account.
The number to call is: 1-800-827-6364.
You may reach an automated system that will ask you to say what you would like to do. Simply say the word ‘cancellation’ in a clear voice.
You’ll be put on hold and eventually transfered to a customer service representative. Tell this representative : ‘I’d like to cancel my AOL account at this time’. The representative may ask why you want to cancel, simply tell them you are canceling because you no longer need the service.
If the representative continues to push for a reason or try to sell you a product, be polite but firm. Simply repeat that you are calling to cancel the account and that is what you would like them to do. Don’t use harsh language, insult the person, or yell.
Before ending the conversation verify verbally that the account has been canceled.
Send a typed letter to AOL to cancel an AOL account:
PO BOX 17100
Jacksonville, FL 32245-7100
Include information such as your user name, billing address, phone number, and account number if one is available. The account number is generally found on the monthly billing statement.
Sign the letter and mail it to the address above. This method will take longer than simply calling AOL.
In both cases you should receive a written confirmation from AOL that states that the account was canceled. It can take a few days for the account to be canceled.
After calling or mailing a request to close the account, do not log in to your account or use AOL internet service. From the time of the request up to a few days after, the account is still active and any use will prompt a billing statement and charge.
Check your bank account or credit card statement to ensure that AOL charges have stopped. If they have not, contact AOL immediately.
Canceling any account means a lost customer for a business so it is in the best interest of the business to keep you as a customer. But if you want to cancel an account, the company has to respect the request to terminate service.
