Keeping the air filter of your ATV four-wheeler clean is of the utmost importance. A clean air filter will not only improve the power and performance of your ATV four-wheeler, but it will also extend the overall life of your ATV. Keeping the air filter clean is part of basic ATV four-wheeler maintenance, and it should be as routine as checking the oil.
Location and Removal
The air filter of a high-performance ATV four-wheeler is usually located under the seat, and the latch is usually located in back. Simply pull up on the latch, and be prepared to thoroughly clean off any dust, dirt, and debris from the surrounding area as well as the plastic air filter cover.
The air filter cover is more than likely held in place by bolts. Remove the bolts, and once again, make sure the area is free of dust, dirt, and any debris. After removing the bolts, it might be necessary to use a flathead screwdriver to break the seal of the cover in order to remove it. Use care when separating the cover from the casing so you don’t damage either piece in the process.
Once the cover has been removed, you will notice a small gasket. This gasket seals the cover, and extreme care should be taken to avoid damaging it. If the gasket is in bad condition, or if it becomes damaged during removal, it will require replacement. A new gasket is usually only about five or six dollars if it needs to be replaced, and when in doubt, replacing it is well worth the time and expense. The life of your ATV four-wheeler engine greatly depends upon the quality and condition of the air filter that protects it.
The next step is to locate the screw in the center of the air filter. Carefully remove the screw, and gently pull it out. You’ll notice a plastic support inside the air filter. Carefully separate the support from the air filter, and gently remove it to avoid ripping the material.
After the plastic support within the ATV four-wheeler air filter has been removed, very gently wash it in warm soapy water. Ordinary hand soap is fine. Wash and rinse it repeatedly until the water that comes through is clean and clear. Once again, use extra care to avoid ripping the air filter during cleaning.
Replacement
Once the air filter is clean, carefully replace the plastic support in the center, and put it back into the ATV four-wheeler in the same manner as it was removed. Putting it in wrong could break the seal, and if the seal breaks, dirt and debris will be sucked into the engine, and this could cause considerable damage to the engine of your ATV four-wheeler.
Next, put the gasket back in place, and make sure it fits properly. Any misalignments could prevent it from sealing correctly, which once again, this mistake could result in costly engine damage. Place the main cover back on, and make sure it also seals properly. Last of all, put the seat back on, and you’re once again ready to go!
