If you own a laptop, a “cool pad” or “cooler pad” can help keep it cool. Cool pads are simple products containing one or two fans. They act as a base for your laptop at your desk. Depending on your needs, a frozen pad with a built-in USB hub can also act as an inexpensive docking station for your USB peripherals. Cooling pads are simple pieces of equipment that can extend the life of your laptop, especially if it is prone to laptop computer running hot. Although simple in design, frozen pads sometimes need maintenance.
The biggest problem with cooling pads is that the fans are either on or off. If the cooling pad forgets to turn off, the fans continue to circulate the air. It’s not long before dust, debris, and hair turn the fans. If you notice excessive noise or if the fans are no longer spinning, it is time for a good cleaning.
Begin by unplugging the frozen pad. Take it outside and use compressed air to blow out the dust. Once the main gunk has been removed, go back inside and use a pair of tweezers to pull out any hair that may be wound around the fan.
While you’re at it, check the fan blades to make sure there aren’t any protruding through the grill. Broken or bent fan blades can get stuck in the grill, making the fan inoperable. If you pierce any of the fan blades, use a pair of tweezers to gently pinch the blade inside. Depending on the extent of the bending, it is necessary to sacrifice cracking and removing the steel. While your fan will be a little less efficient, once the piece is removed it will be able to circulate air, which is better than the fixed-in-place, concrete alternative.
Use a baby or wipe-free cloth to clean the top and bottom surfaces of the ice pad before applying the ice pad on and testing its effect. If the herbs move spontaneously and the sounds have returned to normal, then your job is complete. All that is left to do is to plug in the USB peripheral (USB hub models) and place the laptop on the frozen pad.
