If you know how to contact your spirit guide (SG), that is wonderful and gratifying. However, what if you do not know how to contact your SG? How do you get started? Well, hopefully I can help you. I do not proclaim to be an expert on this, but I will be happy to tell you how I do it and you can take it from there.
I started reading as much as I could about SGs, particularly books by Sylvia Browne. Then I realized that I always have been talking to my SG. My mother always told me when I was a child to listen to the voice inside me, that it was my conscience. I have tried to do just that. But, I do not just listen, I have conversations with that voice inside my head. I ask questions like, if I tell someone’s mother that I caught them smoking in the bathroom, will it make a difference? Or am I just tattling? Obviously that was a question when I was younger, like in high school.
I would get an answer though. The answer I got on that question was that if someone is doing harm to themselves and it would be in their best interest to have help from someone, then you need to tell the person who could help them. In this case, I decided not to go to my cousins mother but instead her older sister and the school counselor and she does not smoke to this day because of that.
When I was younger though, I did not realize that not everyone has a voice in their head that talks back to them. I just thought it was normal and had no reason to ask anyone about it. Now, I do not mean any voice that tells you to harm another or harm yourself. This voice is not an unbidden one, it is in answer to a question. There are times when my SG will contact me about something that I have not asked but usually it is something to help me or protect me. For instance, my SG might tell me not to drive a certain route while I am driving on my way somewhere.
Sometimes, I do not have a choice because I live in an area that is rather rural and I do not have a lot of options in regards to getting where I need to go. So, when that happens and I cannot turn around and go home or go another way, I just try to be hyperalert of everything around me. I ask God to help guide me safely to my destination and I ask Pa, my husband’s deceased father to watch over me. I consider the symbol for him to be the red tailed hawk, and when I see that hawk, I know he is watching over me and will protect me.
Let us get back to the question at hand though, how does one go about contacting their SG? First, I would say, if you are already hearing answers in your head, you are half way there. Just start paying attention to that voice and those answers a little more. Start asking questions mentally (not aloud) and see if you get an answer. You might want to try to test that answer. It is human nature after all, so you might be tempted to go against an answer to try the opposite. I would suggest, however, that if you do that you might want to make certain that the event will not cause you or someone else harm before you follow that inclination. If you do go against the suggestion and the “event” occurs like you heard in your head, you know you are communicating.
You might even ask your SG to help you know who is calling on the phone before it rings. In the morning you might ask, “Is my friend from work, Joan, going to call?” (Remember to be specific, you could ask ‘am I going to get a call from a coworker’, but if you are thinking about someone specific, you should ask specifically, otherwise maybe it was just coincidence.) If you have caller ID don’t look at it, and quickly ask you SG, is that Joan calling? What is your answer? Was it Joan? If you really thought it was Joan but it was not, think back, did you really get an answer or did you just want that answer? Boy, that is a tough question isn’t it? I am not really asking you to second guess everything you hear, but just to be aware that you might be superimposing your own thoughts into your subconscious because that is what you want to hear.
Another really great way to contact your SG is to use a meditation CD or tape designed just for that. Sylvia Browne has a small book out titled Contacting Your Spirit Guide and it includes a CD to help you. This CD is made by Sylvia and she helps you meditate and then visualize your SG. She helps you also start communicating with your SG.
When I first listened to this CD and every time thereafter when I need a little help and relaxation, I see a large buck standing on his hind legs as representative of my SG. I do not have a good answer for why I see my SG as a deer but I have. I think it is possible that I may need to learn something from this animal or his demeanor. It is a symbol I am sure, but I have yet to figure out for what. I am working on that.
Another way I’ve found to contact your SG is simply to ask. Before going to sleep each night I would pray and then ask for my SG to tell me his/her name. One morning, just as I was waking up turning off the alarm, I heard pretty loudly, “My name is Tracy,” in my right ear. There was no one in the room with me, my husband was on the road and my children were still asleep. I felt that this was my SG introducing himself/herself to me.
I used the nebulous gender in this statement, because I was not sure if Tracy was male or female, as the name can be used for either gender. I told my mother about this, and said I just do not know about the gender of my SG. She said simply to me, “Well if you asked your guide for a name, why don’t you just ask for the gender?” Oh, well that was pretty easy. Sometimes it’s hard for me to remember that I can ask Tracy anything.
The most important thing to remember is that you must have a modicum of faith when you embark on this journey of contacting your SG. You may feel funny or silly about asking questions in your head and listening to answers, but if you have faith and feel that this is your SG talking to you, you will move ahead with confidence. If you fear or worry, those emotions will block your attempts at contact. The other thing I would caution you about is sharing the fact that you are trying to contact your SG with someone who is negative or is not ready to accept such things.
The negativity will cast doubt in your mind, and again block your attempts. The subconscious is a tough bird and when you dream all those thoughts from the day negative or positive will drop into your subconscious making them a reality to your mind. When those thoughts are negative, due to someone being negative and making you feel silly and doubtful, guess what? Your conscious mind the next morning starts believing that, then you have a whole new block to overcome to get to your SG.
Good luck and good talking! Your SG is there, you just may not be aware of it yet. Best wishes on your journey.
