Gas Stoves are cheaper to run than electric stoves. Natural gas is a cheaper fuel than electric. Some people do not like gas stoves. They would rather have an electric stove and pay the extra money to use the electric stove. Your stove may have a gas stove hooked up in your kitchen and you want to disconnect the stove safely by yourself. Disconnecting your gas stove is an easy job as long as you pay attention to what you are doing.
The Tools You Will Need To Disconnect Your Gas Stove
• Two adjustable wrenches
• Hammer and large screwdriver
• Thread seal or pipe seal tape
• A friend to help you
1. The newer gas stoves are plugged into the wall and use both electric and gas. The electric is what starts your gas stove when you turn it on. The gas the fuel your stove uses. You need to disconnect both connections. Older gas stoves do not have the electric connection. Pull your electric plug out of the wall. Go outside and shut off the gas to your house. Some shut off valves are in the basement. The outside valve can easily be shut off by tapping the valve with a hammer and screwdriver.
2. Go inside the house and pull the stove out from the wall. Be careful not to ruin your floor. Be careful not to pull the stove too far out suddenly. You will see a gas shut off valve hooked to the wall and behind your stove. It is at the on position; turn it to the off position. You have the gas shut off in two places in your house.
3. Disconnect the supply line from the wall. This is the step you may need to use your friend. When a safety valve is used on a gas stove, the part closest to the wall may want to disconnect instead of your supply line. Have your friend put his adjustable wrench on that part while you use your adjustable wrench on the supply line. Turn the bolt on the supply line counter-clockwise until it disconnects from the safety valve. No gas will come out because you shut off your main gas supply and the safety valve. This is because you decided to disconnect your gas stove safely yourself.
4. If you are changing to electric, you will need to plug off the supply. If you are reconnecting a new gas stove, you just have to reconnect the stove in the reverse you disconnected the old stove. Make sure you put pip seal tape on the pipe before you connect the supply line to your new stove and the gas supply. You can disconnect the other end of the supply line from your old stove and reuse it or buy another supply line. The safest thing to do would be to buy a new supply line at Lowes or The Home Depot.
5. This is how you plug off your gas supply to your house. Disconnect the other end of the supply line from your old gas stove. Take the supply line to Lowes or The Home Depot. Buy the correct size gas plug by matching up the end of the supply line that came out of your safety valve. Don’t forget the thread seal tape. Take the thread seal tape and wrap it on the threads of your gas plug. Take the plug and turn it into the safety valve opening. Make sure you tighten the plug as much as you can. You will not need a friend in this step because you will be turning the plug clockwise. Make sure the safety valve remains shut and the plug is tightened down. It is now safe to turn on the gas.
6. Go outside and turn on the gas to your house. Check out your work. Put water around your work and look for any bubbles. There should be no bubbles. Smell for gas. You should have no problems. Make sure the safety valve remains to the shut off position. You now have two things blocking the gas from coming into your house, the safety valve and the gas plug. You have learned how to safely disconnect a gas stove. Now you can have your electric stove delivered and hook it up knowing you have peace of mind.
7. Make sure you relight your gas hot water heater. Follow the directions that are on the outside of your hot water heater and you will have hot water in no time.
Warnings and tips
• If you have a gas leak, you did your job incorrectly and need to call in a professional. Get out of the house immediately.
• When you disconnect the supply line you may get a small puff of gas, this is normal because there was a little bit of gas caught in the supply line.
• If you do not understand the directions, do not try to master this project by yourself, gas is not something to mess with if you are unsure about what you are doing.
• When it comes to gas, safety should be your number one priority
