While on a recent trip to old mining areas in Michigan’s upper peninsula, I was viciously attacked by biting black flies. The black flies were annoying because they were circling my face, but I didn’t know that they would come out and bite let alone draw my blood. As I rubbed my hand over the side of my face I picked up something that looked like dried blood, but I still didn’t know what to blame for the biting black flies. I look in the mirror on my neck found a red spot on my neck and three more around my eyes, one of which is just above the eyelashes . The black spots caused by biting eyes of the right eye appear bruised – as if something injured is far more threatening than a biting fly, and I had to find a way to get rid of them and prevent further attacks. The bright red marks left by black fly bites are far more noticeable than mosquito bites, and disgusting to say the least.

Next time I visit the upper peninsula of Michigan, or any of the other areas known for biting black flies, I will be prepared. To repel black flies and prevent biting, I will dress in light colors, arm myself with a bottle of Bugzilla, and wear a netted hat when necessary. Although I would feel incredibly self-conscious and silly, wearing a red hat from the forest. a hat far better than red would look at the spots on my face and watch the abraded area of my eyelid gradually disappear.
