There’s no denying that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the cutest dogs around. Luckily for owners they are also pretty easy to groom. A bath with protein shampoo, a comb out and a nail trim will keep your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel looking their best at home between professional grooming. Follow the steps below for a full groom.
Tools: slicker brush, steel comb, thinning shears, dog grooming shears, dog grooming clippers with a #10 blade, protein dog shampoo, dog conditioner (optional), towels, blow dryer, ear cleaner, cotton swabs and balls, eye cleaner, nail clippers and styptic powder.
1. Use the shedding brush and steel comb to comb through the entire coat. Make sure all mats are removed before bathing the Cavalier.
2. Place a small amount of ear cleaner in each ear and gently massage from the outside. Use the cotton swabs to remove any dirt. Place a cotton ball in each ear before bathing to keep the water out.
3. Place a small amount of eye cleaner on a cotton ball and gently wipe away any dirt from under each eye. Make sure to avoid contact with the eyes.
4. Use the #10 blade on the dog clippers and shave a half inch around the anus. Be sure not to let the blade come in contact with the anus. Lift each back leg and shave from the belly to the groin area and down the inside of each hind leg.
5. Use the toenail clippers to trim the toenails to the length of the floor. Use the styptic powder on any nails that get trimmed too short and bleed.
6. Grab the towels and the dog and head to the bathing area. Bathe the dog with a protein rich shampoo and rinse until the water runs clear. Use a protein rich dog conditioner if necessary and rinse again until the water runs clear.
7. Towel dry the dog as much as possible and finish with a hand hair dryer or cage dryer. Remove the cotton balls from the dog’s ears.
8. Use the slicker brush to remove all the loose hair after drying the Cavalier.
9. Use the thinning shears as needed behind the ears and at the top of the back legs to remove stray hairs.
10. Use the dog grooming shears to trim stray hairs from each leg, or cut to the desired length.
11. Holding the tip of the tail comb through the entire tail. Use the shears to trim away any stray hairs, or trim to desired length.
12. Use the grooming shears to trim the fur between the pads of the feet to even with the pads. Trim the tops of the feet for a rounded look.
13. Use scissors to trim away the whiskers on the snout of the King Charles Spaniel, or leave them if you or the owner wish.
By following the steps above your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will stay looking his best throughout the year. You’ll save a few dollars at the dog groomer’s shop too.
