If the entrance to your home is a shady spot in your yard, then you already know the challenge of finding just the right flowering plants to live in a shady area. Although ferns are elegant plants that thrive in the shade, adding a splash of color can bring a shady space to life. With a little care and planning, even areas in full shade can be bright and inviting.
Ferns
Think of your garden shed as a canvas. Before you start adding interesting details, you’ll need a background. Ferns provide a soft lake of green color from early spring to late fall frost. A variety must be selected from any seed catalog. If you live in a rural town, they are free to take.
All my ferns from native ferns in dark places I transplanted all my fortunes with ferns. A walk through the woods will give you more than you can use. These are best transplanted in early spring, but the entire root of the fern must be dug deep. Dig up the soil of the clod of fern and plant it in suitable soil. Ferns need moist soil to perform well, so be sure to provide enough water. Leave plenty of room between your specimens to accommodate growth. You want to display individual plants, not create a fern wall.
Impatient
Impatiens comes in various colors from white to red. These indoor loving plants are easy to grow and require little care other than adequate watering. Their delicate flowers will brighten any shady area and their compact growth makes them a great choice to grow under ferns.
Petunias
Over the years Petunias have earned their reputation by hanging baskets in charming Fuchsia.
Lily
I have had great success with Asiatic lilies in my shade garden. These magnificent plants send out branches nearly three feet high. Their size and shape is surprising, in contrast to the thin leaves of ferns.
Hostess
These shade-loving plants produce large heart-shaped leaves, and come in a variety of colors from green, blue, gold, and variegated white. They add variegated varieties and white rats, which simply shine in the shade garden. The bold leaves of Hosta big are sure to catch the visitor’s eye.
Astilbe
This shade of pious plants with a fine textured texture is sure to please the eyes. Colors available range from white to pink and salmon. These delicate flowers give the impression of clouds of color floating in the garden.
Hard Cyclamen
Cyclamen heart has green and white shaped leaves that will last all winter in southern climates, but should be replaced in northern areas. These plants send out 4-inch spikes that produce up to 50 blooms when the plants are mature. The flowers always reminded me of a flock of butterflies as they perched on the plant with short spikes. They also come in a variety of colors and bloom from summer to late fall.
Shasta Daisies
Although garden books and websites do not list Shasta Daisies as shade loving plants, I have had success growing them on the north side of my house where they get late afternoon sun throughout the summer. These magnificent beauties are sure to draw attention to the entrance.
Forget-me-Nots
These delicate blue flowers are the perfect addition to your garden shed, although they don’t bloom for a long time, these airflowers will bloom before your ferns reach full growth in the spring. They are a happy transition from the first bulbs to the later summer flowers. Left to its own devices, Forget-Me-Nots scatter their own seeds each year. They are also available in white and pink.
Begonias
Begonias make a striking display and range in color from white to shades of red, pink, yellow, and coral. Their waxy leaves are nice against the feathery texture of airy ferns and astilbes. These shade-loving plants bold-colors spray.
I always envy those who have bright colorful entrances decorated with large flowering flowers. My house the north face and the beds directly in front of my house do not receive any direct light until late in the afternoon.
