Every March and April the land seems to really come alive with color. Trees begin to sprout and bloom, grass begins to grow and flowers begin to spring. If you’ve ever driven down a spring country road, you’ve probably seen one of Mother Nature’s most amazing features: a field covered in a blanket of flowers.
This scene is as spectacular as nature’s designer and gardener. But such a display seems to be made of its own accord by an admirable thought. Of course, flowers do not grow spontaneously. They have the right conditions to prevail. But many flowers seem to thrive in pretty rough conditions, such as potholes, steep cliffs, even cracks in the sidewalk.
Surely, if flowers can thrive without human interaction, they must do even more with a little TLC from a real person. The good news is this is true: you can play “Mother Nature” and display a beautiful wildflower with your Pauline. However, if you think you can throw a seed into the next field and get good results, you are probably wrong.
If you have a large area your own garden bed, or even a few planters that could use some color, consider planting a flower. Here are a few tips to create a stunning spring flower display.
Choose a seed
When choosing a flower seed mix, consider the region of the country in which you live. Also, consider mixing your plan with annuals or perennials.
An annual flower only during the growing Annual season, but it will generate many seeds, sometimes 4-5 times their amount. perennial companions If your flower meadow is left to seed, then mowed, the seeds will plant themselves, they will sleep in winter and the flowers will return. in the spring
A perennial flower will create a plant that will bloom for several years in a row. However, the first year, the perennial flower does not produce many flowers and does not bloom because it is all violence in food sets. /a> system that will prevail over the following years.
Finally, many flower mix inert material, such as rice hulls or vermiculite. This addition of inert material helps in sowing, so that the seed is spread more evenly in the planting. But inert matter can also create some falsehood. When you see a big bucket of flower seeds at your home store or garden center for $19.99, it seems like a great deal. But if you look at the label, you can see that it only covers 150 square feet and contains 1 ounce of actual sunflower seed. Some products actually have less than 1% seed in their mix. Read the labels and make sure you know what you can carry in that bucket or shaker before you buy.
Just prepare
Soil preparation is one of the most misunderstood steps in planting a flower meadow or garden. Many people think that they can act like mother nature and throw seeds here and there and the results are amazing. This gardener achieves something, but certainly could not make progress.
You want to clear the area of plant material of all other plants. then, using a rake, the soil is raised to a depth of 2 inches. Take the time to break up the dirt clods and remove the rocks. After this step, you may want to wait a few days and see if any weeds come up. Water your plot with dirt to encourage weed growth, and use herbicide to eliminate weeds. This will give your wildflower seeds the best chance of success in the cutting competition.
Scatter the seed
In Fall and Spring are great times for planting flower seeds The most important part of planting your flower seed is not in the plant. If your seed is sown too thickly, the flowers will be tall and leggy, competing for space with their neighbors. they will not extinguish much green and not so much color. Follow the planting directions on the package. One ounce of flower seed will cover about 150 square feet, while four ounces will cover 500 square feet.
If your seed is not already mixed with inert material, you can mix your seed with sand (4 parts sand to 1 part seed) or rice hulls. Rice hulls are great options because they also act as mulch for your seeds, keeping them moist longer after watering. You can scatter your seeds using a hand sprayer.
After your seeds have been spread, lightly rake the area again, then cover the seeds to prevent them from being called out before germination or eaten by birds.
Keep your spirits up
After you have lightly sprinkled the soil over your flower seeds, water the area to keep it moist. You need to keep the seed bed moist for 2-3 weeks while they germinate flowers to finish their cycle and remain dry until. They check the seed pods by opening them. If the seeds are brown or black, you can mow your lawn. Leave the dead plants where they are and the seed pods will naturally open and divide their seed where they will wait for the spring rains to help them germinate and start the whole process again.
