How to Grow Lima Beans in Your Garden

Filet beans – also called butter beans – are quickly becoming a garden favorite. This vegetable is native to Central and South America, and they need temperatures that are warm enough to grow. Plant lima beans after the last spring frost killing. You can sow houseplants by starting them in a greenhouse or in a greenhouse three to four weeks before the last spring frost. Green beans grow best when the temperature reaches a minimum of 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are several varieties of filebeans including bush and pole varieties. Use pole varieties for areas with limited space. Decorate or add tall plants next to them to support vertical growth. Fila beans can have white, green, red, brown, or purple seeds, depending on the variety.

Bush varieties of filet beans grow about two feet tall. Pole varieties have large seeds and can grow up to 12 feet tall. Pole varieties usually have larger seeds and are grown for storage as dried beans seed one inch high and about 4″ apart. When the plants are about six inches tall, thin them out about six inches. misty but not wet.

You can also grow lima beans in containers. Use pots that are about 8″ in diameter and 8″ high. Place the pots in a sunny window and turn the pots regularly to distribute the sun or sunlight.

Bean pods are ready for harvest in about seventy days, when the pods are full and the seeds are well developed. The seed pods can be allowed to ripen on the plant and dry for storage as dried beans. Dried lima beans can be stored in an airtight container for up to a year. Fresh lima beans can be shelled and stored in the freezer.

Green beans are an excellent source of iron, protein and vitamins A, C and K. They are also high in potassium and calcium. Beans are low in calories and high in pure fiber.

For many cooks in the southern US, string beans are a staple – both fresh and dried. Where fresh files are not available, the dry type is equally useful. These beans are usually cooked by boiling. Green beans are used in many dishes including soups and stews. The southern wind is Hamo flocks with filet beans.
