How to Keep Mice Out of Your House

There are few things in nature like the cute mouse. But few of us found that cute little muscle when it was first spotted running across the living room floor. Most people are even less impressed when they find their bread raided at night by a group of mice. Here are some tips that will help you keep mice out of your home.

The first and most important step to keep rats out of your home is to close any openings they can come through. A simple walk around your home should identify places that a mouse can enter. Fill the holes with insulation spray, wood putty or any other substance that will make entry difficult. Big holes need to be repaired. If your house is larger, it simply won’t be possible to physically keep rats out of your house. Key areas to look at are access to utilities such as water pipes, electrical wires, cable / television wires, etc. Working carefully around these holes, a large island of foam works here. Also, look around your dryer for mice to squeeze through the space. Also check around doors and windows and windows. Filling all these holes will not only keep mice out, but will also help keep your books warm and cool.

Once you’ve tested the outside of the mouse as much as possible, it’s time to look inside. Go into your dark base or crawl space during the day and look for light sources. If light is coming in, there’s a hole that needs fixing (or it’s a window!). Go back to the ledge or find the night space with internal lights and again look for holes where the light enters the room / crawl space. I remember checking the plumbing mostly around the house.

The following two main steps are different to do. By keeping a clean house and not leaving food and crumbs everywhere, you will keep mice (and insects) from feeding and make your house less of a mess. Domestic dogs and cats were only non-domestic enjoyed alone. A predatory presence will convince rats to check out your neighbors house instead of yours. Brush your dog(s) and cat(s) regularly and shed small amounts of hair around outside your home. A mouse will smell danger and likely pass. Few stray cats live outside big help if in a place where this is practical.

One thing to keep in mind is that once you’ve tried to get rid of a mouse, your house is already inside. While cheese may be the food in cartoons, peanut-butter seems to work better. Whatever bait you use, make sure it is well attached to the trap so that the little crickets cannot steal it. If you use a live trap, you can’t throw it outside the door so it can come back through the hole which I left out.
