How to Make a Baby Buggy Cake

If you are planning a baby shower you might want a traditional cake, but I urge you to look at your options. A baby buggy cake is a cute cake to have for your baby shower. It is not as hard as you think to make the cake. It is actually relatively simple with the steps I am about to tell you. You will need one large round cake pan (anywhere from 12-16 inches will be fine), two 6 inch cake pans, 3 cake mixes, 4-5 tubs of icing, food coloring, non-stick cooking spray, eggs for the cake mixes, and water or oil for the cake mixes.

You will first need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. You will now need to prepare your cake pans with the cooking spray. Just spray the pans very generously, so your cakes will not stick. You will then need to mix up 2 of the cake mixes as directed by the package. These will be used for the large round cake pan. Pour the cake mix into the pan until the pan is ¾ of the way full. If you still have batter left over, set it aside for now. Make sure your batter is even in pan. You can now put this large pan into the oven and begin baking. Make sure to start checking it with the toothpick test when you smell it. If you do not know what the toothpick test is, do the following. Insert a clean toothpick in to the middle of the cake. Pull it out and if it is clean the cake is done. If it comes out with batter on it the cake needs to cook a little longer. While the large cake is cooking you can start preparing the two smaller cakes for the wheels. You will now mix up the cake mix that you have left. Pour the batter in equal amounts into the prepared smaller pans. Make sure that the batter is even and filling the pans up to ¾ of the way. If they need a little more batter, you can use the batter you had left from the big cake.

You can either start baking the little cakes with the big cake or you can wait. I would put them in the oven with the larger cake because there is extra space in the oven. You will just need to watch all the cakes closely! When the cakes are fully baked you will need to take them out of the oven and let them cool for at least 15 minutes. After they have cooled for a while remove them from their pans and cool another additional three hours. After they are cooled you can start assembling the cake. I have provided a pattern for the placement of the cakes. You will also need to cut out the opening of the buggy. That is also shown here on the pattern. You can also add a handle if you like with cookies.

You are now ready to begin icing your base coat. You can either tint it or use plain white. Ice one layer over all of the cake with the optional handle. This will be a crumb coat. You will then ice over the whole cake again. You are now ready to begin decorating. With the icing that you have left, you can tint two to three colors or more. I would do two to three because it looks better that way. Tint the icing drop by drop until you get the desired color with the food coloring. You will need to do basket weave on the lower half of the buggy with your main accent color. You will also use this color to go around the top of the buggy for a border and also around the wheels. You will then use your second accent color to make a border around the top half of the cake and the spokes of the wheels. See the decorating pattern that I have provided. You can decorate the top of the buggy with flowers or any other types of decoration you want. More suggestions are stars, flowers, and dots. You have now completed the cake, enjoy!
