How to Make a Ladybug Cake

If your child loves ladybugs, I have the perfect cake for you to make on their next birthday. You can make this cake easily with these instructions. You will need two cake mixes, the required amount of eggs for the mixes, required amount of oil or water for the mixes, two to three tubs of frosting, red, green, and black food coloring, an 8-9 inch round pan, a two quart Pyrex bowl, and non-stick cooking spray.

You will first need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Next you will need to prepare your cake pan and Pyrex bowl. Spray generously with the cooking spray. You will then need to prepare the cake first cake mix. After it is mixed, pour it into the Pyrex bowl until it is ¾ full. Save any additional cake mix. Ensure that the batter is distributed evenly in the bowl. You can then start baking the cake in the bowl. This will be your ladybug body. You can now mix up the other cake mix, which will be used for your base or grass under the ladybug. After the mix is ready, you can pour it into the round cake pan. You will then add the additional cake mix that you had leftover if needed. This cake pan should not be more than ¾ of the way full either. You also need to make sure that it is even. You can now start baking this cake too.

You will need to make sure the cakes are done with the toothpick test. All you do is slide a clean toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out with batter on it then it is not done! Bake longer as necessary, but keep a close eye on it. When the cakes are done, you can pull them out of the oven and let them cool for 15 minutes. You will then need to remove from the pan and bowl. Let them cool an additional three hours. When they are both full you will now need to prepare your frosting.

In the first tub of frosting, you need to add green food coloring until you get a desired green for the grass. This will be for your base cake, which is the one cooked in the pan. Place the round cake on a cake board or cookie sheet that has been covered with aluminum foil. You will then use your green frosting to coat the entire cake. You will do this in two layers so the crumbs are covered. Next you will need to place the ladybug body on top of the base of the cake. This is the cake cooked in the Pyrex bowl. It will look like the attached pattern. You will now decorate the ladybug. You will need to tint one tub of icing red. Reserve about ¼ of the other tub of icing; it will need to be white for the eyes. You will need to tint ¾ of the tub black.

Next you will start icing the ladybug; you will frost the whole lady bug body red. You will then need to frost a semicircle black on the front, this will be the ladybugs face. If you look on the pattern I attached you can see what I mean. You will then frost to ovals on the black section for the eyes. You will then frost to black circles in the eyes for the pupils. You will now need to add black dots to the body. You will now have a completed ladybug. Enjoy!
