The best part of a party is the neat stuff people do to increase the ambiance. The cake is just one of those things. If you’re throng a 70’s party the party is not complete unless you have disco music, a disco ball, bell bottoms, psychedelic stuff, and if you really want to WOW your guests – a Disco ball cake. Yes, a disco ball cake – imagine their faces when they see that.
Thing you’ll need:
– 2 glass or metal bowls of the same size.
– Foil covered cookie sheet or cutting board
– candy confetti
– 2-4 cake mix boxes (preferably the yellow cake mix, and amount of mix is dependent on the size of ball.)
– all ingredients you’ll need for the cake mixes (read back of box)
– white frosting
– 10 silver edible sugar sheets
– a mixing bowl
– 1 chop stick or skewer. (many of the supermarkets that have sushi gives chop sticks for free, and you don’t have to buy them.
Step 1 – Spilt the amount of cake mix you have evenly in two. Mix cake mix in mixing bowl, so that you have two bowls of cake mix, mixed.
Step 2 -Liberal spray bowls with non-stick cooking spray. Pour mix into each of the large bowls. Put each bowl into the oven at the temperature that the cake boxes ask you to for 5 minutes less than they prefera. For example: If the back of the box says bake for 20 minutes, bake for 15 minutes.
Step 3 – Put the cakes on for another 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees. This is to get the inside cooked and not burn the top. At 10 minutes, place a stick into the middle to see if the center is done. It is done if you can pull out a clean stick.
Step 4 – {Caution – Labor intensive step} – Cut the sheets of foil into 1 cm squares. It’s easier to do straight lines along the whole piece, and then horizontal pieces after words, rather than cut each piece individually.
Step 5 – Take cakes out (when done), and remove from oven. If allow the cake to cool for 4 minutes, and flip the bowl over with a jarring hit onto the counter – the cake will slip right out. Cut the bottom of one of the ½ sphere so that it sits flat on a surface.
Step 6 – Place cut sphere on foil covered cookie sheet or cutting board. Frost top of ½ sphere liberally. Place top of sphere onto the other ½ sphere. Press top spheres firmly onto the bottom, part of the disco ball allowing the frosting to adhere each other. Wait for 2 minutes while frosting slightly solidifies. Frost entire sphere. Pay very close attention to detail, since the frosting is extremely important.
Step 7 – Place little squares on sphere. Place them in order, and not in a haphazard form. All disco balls have lines of reflective purposes, but it is covered completely. This is what you need to do for your ball. This step will take about 30 minutes if you work diligently. Place candy confetti on foil on cookie sheet, and now your disco ball cake is ready, and it reflects all of the candy below. You Disco ball cake.
