How to Make Easy Egg Fu Yung and Sauce

Egg fu yung might seem simple, but the recipes can vary as greatly as the spelling variations of this classic oriental dish. One of my favorite oriental restaurants served a delicious version that was topped with a very flavorful sauce, but when I moved to northeastern Indiana, I had to come up with a recipe. I could not find a high quality oriental restaurant in my area. Good pizzas and Italian beef sandwiches were also hard to find, and I taught myself how to prepare many of my favorite dishes. A friend gave me an easy recipe for egg fu yung, but I knew that it could be better. My recipe is simple and absolutely delicious, and it is one of my family’s favorites.

Necessary Ingredients for Egg Fu Yung

To make my easy version of egg fu yung you will need four large eggs, two cups of fresh bean sprouts, a four-ounce package of fresh diced button mushrooms, one-quarter cup of fresh or frozen peas, two teaspoons of dehydrated onion slivers and two teaspoons of vegetable oil. You will also need a frying pan. I prefer an iron skillet, but a nonstick frying pan will suffice.

Optional Ingredients

If desired, meat can be added to the list of ingredients. Add two-thirds of a cup of diced pork, chicken or beef. You might try a combination of meats. Also, sweet white onions can be used instead of the dehydrated variety. Canned mushrooms can be used in place of the raw variety, but fresh mushrooms are much more flavorful. Alter the ingredients to meet your preferences. Omit ingredients that you do not like, and add more of the ingredients that you prefer. My egg fu yung recipe is very versatile!

Preparation Steps

Begin by heating the oil in a skillet of your choice. While the oil is heating, beat the eggs in a large bowl. Gently fold in the fresh bean sprouts and all of the other ingredients.

Next, use a ladle or a measuring cup to create serving size portions. I prefer using a half cup container to measure my egg fu yung. I prefer patties of average size, but they can be as large or as small as desired.

Slowly pour the combined ingredients into the hot skillet, and fry each side until set and thoroughly cooked. Keep the egg fu yung hot while preparing the sauce. However, if it cools down too much, the heated sauce will warm it up again.

How to Make Easy Egg Fu Yung Sauce

To make delicious and easy egg fu yung sauce you will need three simple ingredients. Combine two-thirds cup of water with two teaspoons of soy sauce and one tablespoon of cornstarch. Pour it into a small saucepan, and cook it over a low heat setting. Stir it continuously until hot, thick and bubbly.

Keep the sauce separate from the egg fu yung patties, and serve them with steaming hot rice. Those enjoying the meal can add sauce according to their personal preference. Chances are they will prefer it to restaurant versions of this classic oriental dish.
