How to Make Your Own Vinyl Stickers

Stop paying high prices for store bought vinyl stickers by making your own at home. Here are easy instructions to make this fun craft at home.

You can use a shelf liner paper called Contact Paper to make your own vinyl stickers. Contact Paper is simply a roll of vinyl material with an adhesive backing. It comes in various prints and designs as well as plain solid colors. You can find it in most of your local discount stores or grocery stores in the kitchenware aisles.

To make your vinyl stickers, you’ll start by drawing the shapes that you intend to cut out. The Contact Paper has a paper release backing covering the sticky side when you buy it. You may find it easier to draw onto that release paper. It won’t damage the vinyl when you do it that way, and you can erase or redraw as many times as you need to. Just don’t draw so hard that your pen pokes through and damages the vinyl on the other side.

Keep in mind that if you are drawing on the backside, that any stickers you cut out later will be reversed like a mirror image. If you’re drawing things like faces that are symmetrical from side to side that’s not a problem, but if you cut out something like words (where the letters need to be oriented in the right direction) you’ll need to be careful to draw them in reverse so that when you cut them out the front side will be facing the right way.

Once you have your designs sketched out, you’ll cut them out from the sheet of Contact Paper. For this step you’ll want to have the front side of the Contact Paper facing you so that you can watch carefully what you’re doing and not cut accidentally into portions of the vinyl that you don’t want to remove.

Once you have your vinyl stickers cut out of your Contact Paper simply peel off the paper release backing to expose the adhesive and then press your stickers into place. The adhesive is strong but also meant to be temporary. Your stickers will stay in place until you choose to remove them.

Vinyl stickers made this way are handy for a number of different uses. You can use them to decorate walls in your home even if you have an apartment. When you move simply peel them back off and you should have no complaints from your landlord.

Vinyl stickers also make great decorations in places that you don’t want to permanently damage. For instance, if you cut the face for a ghost out of vinyl stickers, you can stick them on your sheet to give your ghost a face and then peel them away after Halloween to return your sheet to being a sheet. This is much better than cutting holes on a perfectly good sheet to make the eyes or drawing them on with permanent markers.

You can also use vinyl stickers to make your own personal envelope seals. Just think how fancy your personal stationary will be when you seal your envelopes with your own personally designed family crest made from vinyl Contact Paper.
