How to Refill a Kleenex Box

Have you ever stopped and thought about how many boxes of tissues your family goes through in a year? Like most of us, that’s probably a large number. Whether it’s cold and flu season, or allergy season, it seems we never stop buying Kleenexes. Although boxed tissues aren’t generally too expensive it can add up to a lot of money if you purchase lots of Kleenex.

Did you know you can refill the tissue boxes you already own? It can save quite a bit of money and it isn’t hard to do. The type of Kleenex box you should use is one that is cube-shaped. Rectangular-shaped tissue boxes, which are fairly shallow, aren’t suitable for refill by the manner discussed here.

After the last tissue is gone from the Kleenex box take a few minutes to create a new opening. To do this, cut one of the side panels. Cut it down both sides and across the top or the bottom, using a craft knife or even scissors. This creates a flap that can be used as a doorway. Make the cuts neat and straight, cutting right down the corners of the panel. Instead of cutting the side you can also cut the bottom. However, the bottom is often a little more difficult to cut because there are more layers of cardboard on the bottom than on the side.

Take a roll of toilet paper and remove the cardboard tube from the center. It’s up to you if you use cheap or plush toilet paper but make sure the roll isn’t so big that it won’t fit into the tissue box. Push the cardboard tube from one side and out the other side. The paper is often lightly glued to the roll; simply tear the paper where needed to disconnect it from the roll. Can’t spare a whole roll? Roll off a long piece of toilet paper, and let it fall to the table, letting a couple of sheets fold one way, then a couple fold the opposite way. This accordion-type stack of toilet paper works as well as the tubeless roll.

Set the stack or roll of toilet paper beside the panel you cut. Open the panel, take the end of the stack, and push it through the Kleenex box opening. If you are inserting a whole roll, take the end from the middle of the roll and push it through the opening. Slide the stack or roll inside then tape the panel shut.

Although toilet paper isn’t the same as tissue it can often work even better than really cheap tissue. Plus, when you refill the Kleenex boxes with toilet paper, you save quite a bit of money, and get a whole lot more tissue!
