In an episode of the show Malcolm in the Middle the village where Francis played host to the murder of a mystery band that drove out most of the guests and ended up unexpectedly drawn into the story. If you think that the murder is the proper mystery of the party, you can avoid this scenario by carefully planning the events of the evening. I have successfully put together the parts of the murder sacrament and have been an active participant in every Halloween for the past fifteen years.
Go up with the plot
Two months before All Saints’ Eve, our group of friends decide who will be responsible for organizing the event. Obviously, you don’t have to take it seriously, but it’s a good idea to decide who will handle the details. Last year the plot was inspired by the show Top Chef. In the past, we had inspired parties. horror movie‘s kills, vampire movies and gunplay roles gone horribly wrong.
For those who don’t have a wild imagination like me, look to your local bookstore for inspiration. I suggest the works of Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes as inspiration or anyone else where you can keep the setting of the party to one scene. One-stage settings are necessary as you don’t want guests working all over town.
Consider location and costs
We were lucky enough to use a friend’s house sitting on five acres for our share. This space gives us space to work and allows for a lot of outdoor scenes (weather permitting). If you don’t have a field or acreage available to you, make the setting for a decent sized house. Remind your guests that while the party may be held at a Victorian mansion”>mansion or a restaurant, there is actually someone living in the party so they act.
Your costs will vary depending on the plot and setting. This can be an expensive task if not properly planned. If you are uncomfortable asking guests to settle for cash, see if they can bring their own favors or food.
Ascend with characters
If I run a mystery, make me a victim. It works best if I’m “off the road” and I’m happy to answer questions and make a nonumy story. If you’re not experienced, consider not playing at all until you’ve had a couple of games under your belt.
Characterization can be a very fun process. Do it as a person, will have fun and be active in history. Nothing can bring murder to a party of mystery than someone who doesn’t play.
Send Invitations
For the horror movie setting, the “director” made a press kit including a poster for the movie and a press kit. You let go of the initial filming. Previously they issued invitations sealed in wax to a mystery that was considered a more formal setting. Make sure you can give your guests enough advance notice so they can mark their calendars and arrange childcare if necessary.
Fun
Enjoy! It is not perfect. Remember, this is a gathering of friends and family. If it doesn’t go according to plan at all, don’t worry about it. The main secret to killing a party, or any party for that matter, is to relax and have fun.
