When choosing a dog to have as a pet for your family a lot of people see rottweiler’s and do not feel that they are such a good dog to have. Rottweiler’s have a bad reputation for being not so nice, and will attack anyone at anytime, but this is not always the truth. Rottweiler’s are actually very nice dogs that when trained correctly can be friendly, and perfect to have around children. Some people watch the news and see rottweiler’s that are loose on the streets and seem to always wind up in animal shelters because they attacked a person or another animal. This usually happens because the dog is sick and dying because he or she was dumped on the streets to fend for himself. This can turn any dog in to a dog that is not safe to be around. Just imagine going from having a warm home with people who love you and feed you, to having to feed yourself and find somewhere warm to sleep every night. This is hard to even imagine, but it happens to so many rottweiler’s every year. People buy these dogs expecting them to be vicious and fight for them ,but find out that they will not. As soon as they see this they usually dump them and find a new dog for the fights that they are being paid for. With the right training and the right knowledge you will be able to train your rottwelier in to a family friendly dog in no time at all. You really just need a lot of confidence and your dog will follow right behind you. Steps to training your rottweiler to be a family pet are listed below.
Step Number One:
Stay calm. There is nothing worse than over reacting and hurting yourself or your new dog. It can be very stressful to train any dog especially one the size of a rottweiler, so you always have to keep in mind that you have to stay as calm as possible if you want your dog to learn anything at all. If you are as calm as you can be then your dog will mimic what you do and stay calm as well. This is very important when training a rottweiler. This is a large dog with a short mind set so he or she needs to always be calm when learning.
Step Number Two:
Have a secure leash and collar on your dog. When training your rottweiler you always want to make sure that you have a secure collar and leash on them in case of an emergency. You would never want to hurt yourself or watch your dog get hurt, so everyone needs a leash and a collar for their pet. There are so many different types of collars and leashes on the market today it is really up to you to find one that you like and that you think will work on your dog. A lot of people go with a choker collar so they can control their dog a little more than they can when using a cotton based collar. Whichever you go with always make sure that it fits well and is not to big, or cutting off your dog’s circulation. This will always result in some sort of problem.
Step Number Three:
Use a calm voice. Instead of shreaking or yelling at your dog to do what you say, try using a calm and relaxing voice. You will see that when you talk nicely to your rottwelier you will get much better results. Your dog wants to do what you say but when he or she is yelled at he automatically does not want to learn anymore and wants to get away from you, this is a problem since he or she will be on a leash and you want them to learn. Also try and always use about the same voice so your dog will understand what you are saying and learn much easier.
Step Number Four:
Never hit your dog. If your dog does something that you do not like or approve of it is no reason to hit them or hurt them in any way. There are other ways to discipline your dog then to hurt them. Try saying no in a firm voice and putting them in their crate. They will soon catch on to what they are doing wrong and stop so they do not get yelled at or put away on their own. No dog likes to be locked up so having a crate or a small room to put them in when they are bad is always a good idea. Remember to not leave your rottweiler in a small room or crate for a long period of time. You have to keep in mind they are large dogs and need room to move around and be happy.
As you can see there are not to many things that need to be done in order to train your rottweiler to be a great family pet. You just have to stay patient and put trust in to your new dog. You will see that this type of dog is not vicious at all, they are actually very nice and caring. Good luck with your rottweiler, and remember to keep a tag on your pet so they do not end up like so many others on the street!
