Every dog owner should make sure that if their dog wears a collar, their collar is not so tight that it causes discomfort in their dog. While wearing a collar that is too tight should be easy for an owner to notice, sometimes a dog has their collar too tight while the owner is unaware. Here are tips on how tight a dog collar should be, and how tight is too tight.
Your dog’s collar should be loose enough to move around without straining on it. Grab your dog’s collar and move his collar where the leash wraps around in a full circle. dog’s neck If you have to pull, the collar is too tight. If the collar moves easily, it is too loose. If the collar moves with minute friction, then the collar is probably just right. To follow this test, place 2 fingers under your dog’s collar, then a third. If you’re still not sure if your dog’s collar is too tight, you can do 2 other little tests. Pet your dog in the neck over the neck and back. Do you feel a bunch of skin before and after the neck? If so, the collar is too tight. Also, take your dog’s collar and loosen one notch and tighten the notch once while it is on your dog’s neck. Perform the above tests with your dog’s collar loose and the notch contracted to see which position (first, tighter or looser) suits your dog best. If nothing else, a collar that’s too loose is a better bet than one that’s too tight, and simply adding a notch between the existing collar and a looser adjustment can give both dog and owner more comfort.
